Kolachi Tweetup ’09

DSC_2927Kolachi Tweet-up ’09 was by no means anything out of the ordinary, a gathering of over 75 twitter users from the city, Karachi, organized yesterday, 26th of July, 2009 by Google and CIO, for an idea conceived by Haris, sponsored by Intel, Acer and DawnNews, was one amazing event.

Twitter, “a free social messaging utility for staying connected in real-time” as described by official creators of the service is no less then a revolution. The tool as discussed in the tweet-up my have it’s side effects but if used with a little responsibility can prove a blessing for students, researchers, writers, marketing executives, business representatives, journalists  and professionals.

Present at the event eminent writer Bina Shah revealed she has been using twitter and facebook to interact with her readers and fans and has found both the tools very useful. Referring to her old static website as a conventional webpage, she said she has got links to her twitter and facebook Fan page embedded in the bottom of her newly designed website to better promote her work.  She did confessed that twitter may have slightly effected her reading habits for which she practices to maintain a safe distance from the utility.

Also Present at the tweet-up, some marketing buffs including @mystakool revealed that many businesses are using twitter to interact with their customers and also promote there services. He said it helps companies know exactly what their customers likes and dislikes about their product or services, an information which is really helpful in improving on the production or services provided to their clients.

DSC_2936Like with any other new emerging social phenomenon some present at the tweet-up also showed concerns for the utility to be misused, it was concluded that with any of the  social networks caution should be practiced, Bina Shah explained how she avoids pinpointing her exact locations, or the place she would be at a certain time unless the event is a public appearance. Adding to the discussion Jehan Ara, the president of P@SHA told how once on her way to conference from the airport on an official visit in Islamabad, she needed some medicines and bandages on an urgent bases and her cab driver declared to her that all pharmacies due to Friday would be closed for the prayers. But then a friend from the city (Awais) reading her tweet on twitter was quick to reply that he could arrange for the urgently needed medicines and came to her help.

The event of Demi Moore saving a women from suicide also mentioned  at the tweet-up as another great example of how social networks could be used for our benefit.

Salman and Ayesha

Salman and Ayesha

Present at the event the two siblings Salman Mehmood and  Ayesha Mehmood,  who run a thalassemia awareness blog and manage a small blood bank as well contributed by saying that twitter helps them a lot when they need blood donations on urgent bases but at times when they host blood donation camps many people agree and confirm their attendance but never show up, they said they make preparations for a certain number of donors but it hurts when not even half of them show up. They stressed that if people could just be honest and let them know they might not show up in the first place it wouldn’t be so hard for them.

At the event Jehan Ara also raised the very valid and serious issue of personal privacy. using these social networks we often overlook the privacy policy. The subject needed much more debate and the scope expended from social networks including twitter, facebook, orkut to email service providers, ISPs even including financial service providers and sadly due to the limited time could not be discussed in further details.

All in all, the whole event was incredibly awesome, we all agreed twitter can be addictive but if used with responsibility can prove to be an incredibly useful utility. now who is Badar…? the oraganizer or one of the sponsors….this post is full of mysteries ….and that is one of the reason why I got turned off from the twitter…..can you believe that I signed in sometime ago and can’t even remember the password now….anyways maybe its my Idiosyncrasy that I do not want to stay connected with the real people….and it could be the only reason why I get online….but now it seems like I cannot hide and seek (learn)anymore….
my predictions for twitter is not very good…..but i get a feeling that i have already missed fried chicken by not being there so I guess I keeps my prediction for my personal enjoyment later…..

    @jamash…..please you are scaring me…..!lol

so as I understand there are three kinds of tweets

1.tweet tweet:the run of the mill tweets..that show up on the roll of all the tweeple who are following you…

2.address tweet:these are direct tweets with an @to someone you may or may not be following….this also show up on roll but is meant for only the person alerted….and goes into the @so&so…which is probably the first think a good twitter should check…after sign in…

3.reply tweets:now this is the one that I do not understand at all….where did it go besides the run of the mill roll….for me it doesn’t show up on the page of person replied to….,it do not show up with the story….or the tweet it was meant for….and most of the time that twitter had gone ahead with several tweets on different topics….that it is almost impossible to understand what I am talking about….this could get a lot of twitters in a lot of trouble any time….needs to be checked soon…

    keep twitting….!

Han baki sub theek hai theek hai….

  13. بستنی (wasiq) on August 6th, 2009 @ 8:42 am

Okay as you can see Iam following 2000 tweeple which is the limit and an exaggerated state…so I get tweets by the minute sometimes at peak traffic hours by seconds…several per minute….slowly and gradually I might come down to a more manageable number of following…say 500 at the most….with 450 casual tweeters and 50 friends and family…regular twitters…still I see no tweet alert….on the home page or the inbox…yesterday I was tweeting with somebody online and I had to check the @……after every minute to see if that twitter has updated the status….there’s got to be another way….even if I keeps a window or tab open with the home page while doing other stuff…to check the the tweet updates(roll) i’ll have to keep clicking…..not good!very pre-historic…lol!

    @ wasiq

Your tweet syndrome is similar to the blackberry syndrome, people keep on twitching for sms, emails, msn alerts, facebook updates, I check all of them guess every hour or more…..while in the loo, while driving, while midnight awakning….the next level when they are moving away from keoboards and voice comands to the direct mind inputs and outputs in next 4-5 yrs…..this wud be hell for the poor brain…..they have already created the mind controled mouse pointer, yet not fully perfected the software.

We don’t know who the next door neighbour is sleeping with, but we know n can even see the preerential bedroom position of people we never met all our lives…thanks to that devilz tool, da webcam…..aaah those steamy live stream websites, wasted so much of my nite watching and sweeting on drom co-eds on webcam……

  15. بستنی (wasiq) on August 7th, 2009 @ 8:52 am

@fasee sab….sir its not a syndrome…..ab aap kay samney koi pani puri rakhey toh aap kya karo gay….abhi mujhey hafta bhi nahein hua tha….my tweets are still blocked…atleast I can read others….yeah aur baat hai kay yeah raat aur yeah hafta zara different hota….last year we(don’t ask)had a lot of fun…outdoors…saved pakistani flag…this year I am either eating ,sleeping or on the net…not even spending time on the roof…..so you can see…and in a weeks time the premier league is about to begin….without ronaldo….Iam not sure if I’d be allowed to watch it this year if I did not go out and play…..
Ah the drom webcam….purely educational…i think it has a negative effect on us….loose interest in the real thing…..my pardosan had cable and Mtv all her educational life yet she can’t even show a finger at me….neither can I….and these days we have mobile phones with weird ringtones….that can turn you off instantly….so I guess there was never any hope….(my humble humble humble apologies to all the sponsors and bookies)lol!

    It was just my imagination
    Running away with me

Well we all are changing…..once I was famouse for buying the biggest crackers in the block…that banged louder then paris hilton for the record…..

Yet now I don’t participat in the religious activit of exploding crackers on shab-b-barat…foregingers might thing exploding crackers shud be baned as its a net practice before we graduate to the crackers in a body wraped jacket.

I don’t send eid cards other then the mufta e-cards, even that I send months before with a timer for exact date sometimes….

I miss drying to get the VHS from under the counter of a shop wala on 4 times the price, renting VCRs and goign to some friend who’s mom n pop were not home…to see what we shud be expecting in heaven when we go there after spending a life full of exploitation, crime, sex, drugs thefts….musalmans shud be prepared for after life you know…

    “Padosan Showing you a finger…”

To be a optomist, after long sessions of MTV or some other channel, maybe she had something in her mind which might have been beyond the showing finger thing…..avaoiding finger kan be a sign shez not itno foreplay….boring for fasee

  17. بستنی (wasiq) on August 7th, 2009 @ 4:36 pm

@fasee sab….and what if she had the same thing in her mind what you have …..”sali jahil phatichar qoum….” lol
anyways I can’t say anything about her without her consent…all I can say is that.. all KMB and you as my witness…I am not showing a finger to any syedzaadi in this town unless there is a ring on it with a stone as big as a rock…even if it’s worth Rs 12/-(terey driver ki qassam)

  18. بستنی (wasiq) on August 7th, 2009 @ 5:04 pm

Dear tweeples…please don’t worry about this hickup….it happens every where on the net when I sign in…..the facebook had a complete overhaul/facelift earlier this year…I believe they call it filibuster in US constitution….I am still searching for a better word in british….
