A window to Pakistan’s wildlife

Nature has gifted Pakistan with a vast variety of flora and fauna. It is home to many wildlife species that are not found in any other parts of the world. However, unfortunately, majority of Pakistani people are neither aware of the importance of biodiversity and its significance impact on human life, nor are they concerned about the continuous phenomenon of habitat destruction, and decline in population of a number of wildlife species due to uncontrolled/illegal hunting.

This situation calls for creating an awareness among masses about the importance of the wildlife of Pakistan, and develop a passion for activities related to eco-tourism. There is a dire need to sensitize the public in general, and the policy makers in particular, about the need and our role in biodiversity conservation.

As a step towards this, Pakistan’s renowned wildlife photographer, Mr. Ghulam Rasool Mughal is holding a solo exhibition of his work on wildlife of Pakistan – predominantly focused on photography of avian fauna, and landscapes. This is the first-ever exhibition of its kind – that is exclusively being held to showcase the beautiful wildlife of Pakistan.

The main objective of the exhibition is to show to people of Karachi, the beauty of nature and wildlife, our country has at present. It is also aimed at creating a sensitivity among public for supporting the conservation activities.

The exhibition shall be held from 25 Feb to 4 Mar 2010, and the venue is Photospace Gallery, Clifton Karachi.

KESC campaign against power thieves

KESC people should know that you need electricity to be power thief. I like the idea of campaign though.

Thank you Mustafa Kamal Bhai

In what is believed to be the last press conference by Mustafa Kamal in the capacity of city Nazim, he said that the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) completed 2,496 projects in the city during the last four years while work on 126 mega projects was still under way.

I wish new administrator will try to achieve standards which Mustafa Kamal has set and will make Karachi better place without making things politicize.

Karachiwala-a subcontinent within a city

About the forth-coming book Karachiwala to be launched in Karachi on Wednesday 24th February 2010 at the Arts Council
Author: Rumana Husain

Karachiwala: a subcontinent within a city, describes the diversity and change within Karachi, as a microcosm not only of Pakistan but of the entire South Asian region. A selection of interviews converges into a unique celebration of the people and their chosen city.
Karachiwala offers a window-view of the city. It presents Karachi’s social and physical diversity through the personal stories of over sixty citizens focusing on individuals, families or groups, and through them elaborates upon the lifestyle, language, values and interests of each community. Whether ethnic, professional, religious, or social, each has a unique story. Karachiwala reveals how these different communities together create the cosmopolitan character of the city, and give it its vitality and resilience amidst its social disparities and tensions.

Spread over 330 pages, Karachiwala contains more than 600 illustrations. Photographs, family trees, maps, diagrams, and foldouts add rich layers of graphic detail, interconnecting the heavily researched text to the dynamics of a growing city. The book also features brief essays specially written by five eminent citizens, elaborating on their own experience of living in this ever-changing metropolis.

MQM and Aafia Siddiqui – Principle Stand or Political Marketing

Disclaimer : This post is not in support/disapproval of Aafia Siddiqui nor it discuss her case. It is purely written in the context of the famous missing person issue. Many of the missing/disappearances occurred in Karachi. Very few people know that missing person issue was one of the main reasons of tussle b/w Cheif Justice’s and establishment/Musharraf , along with Wardi/Steel Mill issue. [read here here]

Visiting Aafia’s family was a good thing to do by MQM but this one was not an ordinary visit. MQM’s support for Musharraf needs no explanation therefore when we read the below news item we have to see it in a larger picture and so, here, we failed to find an important aspect i.e. MQM did not offer apology for its full support to the former president’s policies (at least policies w.r.t WoT). This then forces us to think if this was more a “Political Marketing” campaign than any REAL admission of guilt. Since, of late, the whole nation seems to be behind Aafia Siddiqui, was this visit aimed at cashing public sympathies PLUS to counter JI-JUI effect who are trying to hijack it completely?. There are dozen’s of missing cases from KHI (and many hundred from Pakistan) , why this case only?

I found it important to inform the reader about the magnanimity of this issue by pasting few lines from Musharraf’s book. A tip for those who are interested in reading Mr. Musharraf’s book : Read it in ENGLISH. After realizing, his commando emotions went slightly over limit in English version he has removed some parts in URDU version. Below is a scanned portion that has been, i have read, removed in Urdu version. Read it and decide for yourself if MQM should not make a public apology for fully supporting MUSH foreign policy blindly for 9 years. Will a public apology not be more objective and help better its image on NATIONAL LEVEL issues but also clean at least one stain from its past.

And the news item :
