Rs. 5000 Hits the Market
A few days back the State Bank of Pakistan held a press conference announcing the introduction of new denomination Rs. 5000 currency notes. They proclaimed that “Printing of Rs 5,000 notes is nothing to do with inflation. It does not reflect that prices have gone up,” — Duh!
Today I actually had the chance to accept the coveted Rs. 5000 note, the moment I was handed this small note my first reaction was, to wonder what stupid joke was this guy trying to pull on me as it felt more like the Rs. 20 note. A moment later the puzzled sensation was taken over by an excitement to have my first sight on the brand new denomination, instinctively scanning it carefully eyeing all those security features, yep! it was official and it was valued at 5000 indeed. Sooner then imagined the excitement was over taken by a feeling of depression by the thought of being deprived the feeling of satisfaction lugging around with a bulky One Lac Rupees (100 x Rs 1000) it would now be replaced by a set of twenty simple light weight mini notes (20 x Rs. 5000). If it ain’t inflation then its surely depression for anyone trying to lug a bunch of 5000’s. *Bummer*

What kind of security features does the note have? Any holograms or watermarks that cannot be photocopied?

the current situation of pakistan can make any pakistani sick and Jinnah was founder of this state so he would be more hurt than others.

Yipee easier to bribe your local policewala, politician and all and sundry. I hate the 20 ruppee note it looks like a reciept stub. Can’t they make better looking bank notes.
cool.. dont have much usage for it though, since i dont go around buying pricey stuff.. im more of a Rs. 500 wala guy.
i wonder if they plan 2 change the rest of the notes in this format?
it looks very diff in this photography…..it really is a ’slightly’ broader version of the rupee 20 note which anyway always reminded me the good old 1 rupee note!
i had this one a few days back and i was SO disappointed k bas. the paper quality, the colors, the size everything is SO not 5000-rupee like at all! for some reason i expected it to be grander….the 1000 wala note is much better, atleast it fEELS like a 1000 note!
and anyone seen the 10 ka new note? its just a lower quality version of the old one, a bit shinier though!
Haven’t seen the Rs.20 or Rs.5000 notes, but if they are smaller in size, its better! Pakistani notes (Rs.100 or Rs.500) are so big that they don’t even fit into a wallet. Other major currency notes seen (USD, EUR etc.) are smaller in size and easily manageable. I wish SBP issues plastic notes some day.
@ blue: To me Jinnah looks sad, may be he is asking ” Where is My Pakistan ? ”
What a coincident I just posted some old currency notes of Pakistan from the time when Bangladesh and Pakistan were together ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/jamash/
).
The reason the new notes are smaller are to cut costs — less paper and less ink is used and instead of making just one note, they can make 3 or 4 with the same amount of paper and ink.
Too bad, the chic/coll jargon of Karachi also have to change. One Lac Rupees may be longer be Aik Paitee
I wonder when they would issue 10,000 and 100,000 rupee notes. At this pace very soon I guess.
Aik Khokha can then be called Aik Paitee
Cool aint it???
Haven’t anyone seen the “10 Rs.” note in this format? Or I’ve been fooled?? Coz I’ve got one!!! ??
Haven’t seen it, but doubt I’d like it too much going by the comments here. Doubt it even further I’ll ever carry around many of these…I’m suppose to be broke anyway.
