With less than a week to go for the FIFA world cup 2006, all the big hotels, cafes, clubs, etc of karachi are getting ready to show most of the matches live on big screens. Some, like Avari, have special offers with ’soccer snacks’ + the match for Rs. 220 upto the quarterfinals and the semi-finals and final for Rs. 300. Royal Rodale will also be screening the matches on the big screen. For a football fan like myself, this is great news because watching the world cup on the big screen, with a good crowd is always different. So who are you rooting for?

According to latest news, 3 reknowned religious figures have been pronounced dead in the aftermath of the bomb blast: Mr. Iftikhar Bhatti, Mr. Abbas Qadri and Mr. Haneef Billoo. Angry mobs have been setting up vehicles and petrol pumps on fire all over the city. It is being said that the reaction that started from Saddar has now reached upto National Stadium. On the other side of the city people have been setting vehicles on fire in Malir, Quaidabad etc.
All the government hospitals are over crowded with concerned relatives and blood donors which is making it difficult for the ambulances to reach the ERs. Apparently majority of the rescue work is being done by Edhi foundation and volunteers. MQM has announced a 3 day mourning as a result of this incidents with more strike calls expected from other religious and political parties.
More updates later….

Who would’ve thought that Pakistan’s Davis Cup team would come *this* close to knocking out India in their Oceania Group encounter. On the first day, both teams shared the spoils as Aisam won and Aqeel lost their matches in the singles. The second day saw a professional performance by the experienced and grand slam winning doubles pair of Peas and Bhupati. In the reverse singles on the third and final day, Aisam won his match to tie the rubber at 2-2. It was all upto Aqeel Khan, Pakistan’s number 1, to do the near impossible. He dropped the first two sets to Leander Peas but came back strongly, beating him 6-3 and 6-0 in the third and fourth sets, respectively. The final set saw the experience of the 33 year old Peas outclass Aqeel Khan and he won 6-1 to take India through to the next stage.
But what the Pakistan team achieved in Mumbai was very unexpected and they deserve a big round of applause for coming this close to beating a very mature and experienced Indian tennis team.
Apparently, their father brings them there every evening (I have never seen them in the morning/afternoon hours), makes them sit by the road-side to attract attention of the drivers. It is actually a polite way of asking for money and people give in to the innocence and cuteness of the kids.
I took this pictures at night with my mobile phone’s camera so sorry for the bad picture quality. They were quite shy and the little one took out his hankie to hide his face :)
