I went to the store Yellow today, and waltzed up the stairs to the women’s section, only to find a saleswoman huddled up on the sofa, crying her eyes out. At first, I fell sorry for her to be at work while she was obviously upset, but then a calm rage descended - we walk into a store, expecting to get good customer service, something that is part of the entire ’shopping experience’, not to find someone in such distress that they can’t even answer a simple question like, ‘what items are on sale?’. I might come across sounding insensitive, but if you’re that upset, honestly go home or go cry in a loo, don’t make the customers get so turned off the idea of shopping that they storm out of the store. This is something that stores like Levi’s even needs to work on - their sales personnel is rude and unhelpful - what is it with sales personnel in good stores here, are they THAT miserable that they have to make harried customers even more angry?

Dawn has a news item today by Suparco, which states that the pollution in the city has crossed tolerable limits. The question is, what is the government doing about it? Or will we be forced to slowly die of air pollution?

An excerpt from the article:

The air and water pollution levels in Karachi have crossed national and international environment quality standards posing serious threat to the lives of 12 million residents of the city. In a report prepared by the Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco), scientists have warned the government to take immediate measures to check the factors responsible for deteriorating environment. The research report, which was prepared for the city government, also warned that the metropolis had already reached the critical sustenance limits of pollution on roads. The scientists stated: “The impact of a reduced oxygen level on roads is already apparent from the blood picture of the people residing in or making a living at various traffic intersections. Any addition of a polluting system or technology that may increase the concentration of the pollutants by a mere 1 micro gram per cubic meter (¬µg/m3) is likely to be catastrophic. “Accordingly further addition of automobiles to the existing fleet of vehicles should be stopped forthwith,” the scientists of the prime research body recommended.

Anyone who’s a coffeeholic and has a sweet tooth in Lahore has visited their famous coffee outlet and bakery Masoom’s. They always had a branch in Karachi, but they’ve finally expanded to make it a proper restaurant of sorts called Latte Lounge. I finally got a chance to visit it last week, and was glad to see that their food is as great as I last remembered it. The selection of desserts isnt as varied as it is in their Lahore branch, but it’s still worth checking out. A bunch of friends and I went for their hi-tea, which at Rs.200 per head was brilliant - worth trying out is their cheesecake and their quiche. Latte Lounge is located off 18th Street, and is close by to the Espresso branch at Khayaban - e - Shahbaz.

YAY! The Body Shop finally opened at The Forum yesterday. Did visit the place today and it was crowded with women shopping away. Firstly, the shop is really well designed, the merchandise is all the latest range, and the price range is pretty much the same as it is internationally. Yes, some of us actually converted the rates and compared it with the product prices in Dubai. However, its still expensive, and the price range starts from Rs.350 onwards.

Secondly, it gives me great relief to note that the female attendants are well mannered and actually helpful, perhaps Levi’s should learn a lesson from them. All corporate hating aside, I’m glad an internationally renown brand like The Body Shop has finally opened up in Karachi. Women, prepare to empty your wallets.
