Don’t listen to Inspirex in the following post. Because I did – and believed him. And when I received the passes yesterday I decided to give it a try too and went to watch a movie in a cinema after a long – long time.

Arright, it wasn’t a mess but not as pretty as Inspirex presented in his post (or maybe, as he mentioned, his was premier show). I witnessed once again that no matter what, we will never learn to be in a queue. And NO there was NOT a complete silence either. (Okay it wasn’t a chaos, but I would have preferred it if there was a complete silence.) Anyway, but, it was bearable for the big screen.

I know Karachi is perfectly safe place to live in and that is exactly what our ministers remind us in their T.V./News paper interviews. Perhaps it’s the same reason there is never a week when I don’t hear one or two mobile snatching stories at least, from people I know. Yes not from news but the real people I know.

Here is another one for you, a colleague was going on a night shift in a rickshaw on shahra-e-faisal when another rickshaw came close by and a guy jumped in his (okay I admit it must have been a nice stunt jumping from one moving rickshaw to another). Then his mobile phone and wallet was snatched on a gun point. Later, I came to find out he was not the first, few months back similar incident happened to another person when he was going on a night shift.

Two things I wonder about, first, the stunt, was it really necessary risking your life to snatch a mobile? I am sure he could have done it a lot more easily the way these things happen. Second, later the incident became something to amuse about rather then a terrible situation. This tells me how ridiculously we are used to of such horrible incidents when someone you know was at a gun point just few hours back.

In another note, I went to Sajjad’s last night and it always surprises me to see the crowed. I mean, its not even a weekend and the place was jam packed. To eat out, karachitte’s can go to any possible limit. Ahh well, if I must mention, I didn’t like the food much.

Recently I have been involved in one of the weirdest experiences of Karachi life, that being, the negotiation between the occupants in apartments and the actual owner. So here goes the story.

Someone I know is a US national and lives there, but when he comes back after a year or two he usually invests in a property here in Karachi. This time, he found out that there is actually someone living in one of his apartment. The occupants claim to pay the rent, and, quite amazingly the rent goes to, decently ranked – Police Officer. (Let’s not use the actual names here).

Turns out its not only one apartment but there are dozens (apartments, houses, plots, shops etc) maybe hundreds in near about that are being hijacked by the same group; a group openly declaring itself as a ‘Gunda Group’ and that too is connected to a Political Party. And Mr. Police Officer is somewhat group leader and spokesman.

In the end, with the involvement of other better ranked Police Officers and Army Officers they agreed to negotiate and leave. The owner paid more than RS 100K in the deal. The details are too big to write, other options and drawbacks, threats, courts etc. So I will just cut it short here.

Okay than follow me, I am not a very good guide but most of the pics will speak for themselves. So lets get started. Before we go, lets check some neighborhood Ms. Cow’s. Here is the first one. (time 11:50 PM)

All these belong to Al-Akhtar Trust, I heard there was one huge one but they told me it havent arrived yet. (12:01 AM)

Random view of the market.

Pet Hospital? There was just an empty chair there, no doctor or the medicine what so ever. (2:32 AM)

This part is still a Bakra Mandi but with no electricity, the lights you can see in the pic are of the Mandi that has tents and electric power, I like this pic. (3:06 AM)

Later, the day, was like any other Sunday would have been. The same sun, same air, same familiar sound and smell of the environment; the only difference was, it belonged to year 2006. As the eve started and the sun gently, slowly disappeared as it always would, there was a sight of the moon.

Roads were filled with same traffic, honks and rough driving. People were still shopping as I have always seen ëem do. Where,Ö where was the difference?

Perhaps, in the desktop clock of my computer and in the majority of the peoples mind ñ it is a new start. Is it? Really?

Yes, it was my fault.î Or if they canít get to a conclusion whose fault it was, they never say ìOkay fine, letís call up the cops and let them decide.î Rather, both parties come out yelling at each other and often end up beating each other.

Itís not the end yet, people on the streets come to help (not to help the injured) but help in beating. If you are an elderly the fault is of the young, if you are (or have female companion) fault is of the other, if you are poor, fault is yours ñ you got the idea.
That represents ëusí, as whole, as a nation. And it is one of those times when I donít feel proud being part of it. I wonder when will we learn to have patience, learn to forgive.
