Liaqatabad Underpass

http://karachi.metblogs.com/archives/images/2007/07/30062007-thumb.jpgOr shall we call it underwater pass.

I happened to drive through the place on Saturday night, and it was quite a scene. Fine, the underpass is filled with water and traffic is being diverted, but it created quite a commotion in the middle. People surrounded the area as if a circus was going on down there. A Suzuki pickup carrying ladies and children stopped and everyone stepped out to take a look at flooded underpass. They looked thrilled and amazed, as if a baby elephant was stuck under the bridge.

Candles express it best!

The above picture is not from any art gallery or a rendition from any artist, it is what the heat wave, combined with lack of electricity has done to Karachi!

This candle stand sits on our center table in the sitting lounge. The candles softened and bent within 1 night, just before the monsoon storm hit the city (couldn’t post it earlier as we got electricity just yesterday after 4 days!).

Other articles around the house have also taken impact of the heat wave, though the candles express it best!

440 volts

Got this sms from Jamash:

There was a short in electric wires and we were supplied with 440 volts which burned our TV and God knows what else. The power lines have fallen down over our outside gate. We have been trying to call rain emergency on 4922727 and 118 since an hour, but there is no reply. The storm is yet to come. I don’t know what they mean when they say rain emergency has been declared.

it starts

I have never seen winds so strong here before. The rain is not so heavy but wind is pretty bad. Luckily we still have power, but i know this wont last for long. Lets see whats in store for us. Stay safe everyone.

Tropical Storm Misses Karachi

It seems like the tropical storm formed up in Indian Ocean will miss Karachi. Earlier it was forecasted to hit Karachi on Monday evening. We might get some strong winds and showers though, even that is enough for the city to create a havoc.

Monsoon comes in

The rain started at appoximately 4pm, with very strong gusts of wind and washed off a great deal of things all over the city.

Over 20 damaged billboards on Shahrah e faisal alone 2 wrecked bus stops and one a couple of crashed lamp posts etc. The traffic jam was insane towards the Baloch Colony bridge area.

As a general rule, Shahrah e Faisal should be avoided when the intended route should be heading towards the Baloch Colony bridge. Water tends to accumulate on the left lanes, forcing traffic to squeeze into the right lanes, resulting in a massive jam.

Did someone say rain????

Just as I entered Clifton this morning to head towards office I was greeted by seemingly wet roads and the smell of sift scent of wet earth. Had it rained???

Driving on there were small puddles here and there, the beautiful over cast sky above me and then finally, some sign of drizzle on my windscreen. By the time I reached office, the drizzle had stopped (or rather I drove out of the rain cloud patch).

At the moment though, I see a slight drizzle outside my office window.

It rained here last night. Any one experienced it?
oh…and I just lost power…dang!

Clean up

Nehr-e-Khayyam, the semi dried lake of effluent that passes parallel to the main Khayaban-e-Jami has been undergoing a clean up since early morning.

2 tractors have been seen so far ploughing solid waste from the lake since morning and a long line of spanking new green coloured waste disposal trucks owned by the CDGK are lined up next to the opening and the amount of dust in the air makes things unbelievably irritating.

The good news is, there will no longer be a sewage lake here. Bad news, maybe a concrete jungle extension.

Far sightedness

http://karachi.metblogs.com/archives/images/2007/06/07062007-thumb.jpgAs Mansoor mentioned, the air is pretty clean these days. Smoke and dust free. It’s still pretty damn hot out there, but the visiblity is excellent. I was able to see as far as my eyes allowed from my office building. Usually the smoke and dust in the air limits the visibility to a significant extent. I don’t know how did it happen (did God just install an air filter above Karachi?) and how long it will last, let’s just cherish it while it does. Get on top of your nearby multistory building and take a look outside. It’s worth the sight.
