I got below email from KESC.
As you are all aware of the grave situation KESC has been facing for the past over 2 months. Hostile attacks on people and property and threats by union miscreants have crippled company’s operations.
Despite all odds KESC’s management, officers and workers have been relentlessly working day in and day out for the relief and comfort for the people of Karachi. However, we have now reached a unfortunate point where continuing field operations and repair and maintenance work, in the absence of law enforcement and protection of our people and other assets is no longer possible.
KESC has gone beyond the call of duty in the most dangerous of situations, but some of the recent incidents, especially those on July 20, 2011 suggest that our lives are gravely endangered, especially where law enforcement seems to be siding with the offender.
We would like to share our recent communication with the higher ups in the government regarding the current situation. This will give you a clear idea of the gravity of matters. Following are some of the main points covered in the letter for your knowledge;
Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA) stand as silent spectators as KESC’s people and assets continue to get attacked by union miscreants
Summary of the gross violations for the past 2+ months;
The fifth attempt to gain access to central store at SITE, which contains critical material (PMTs, Cables, and Joints etc), culminated in a 12 hour long hostage situation while law enforcement assumed the role of spectators.
In view of the above and other incidents KESC has decided to discontinue its field operations and expose its people to a bunch of hooligans who are free to break the law at any time. Hence starting from today KESC has suspended all its operations till there is adequate protection for us which is our fundamental right.
On top of all this our Head office was attacked and was brought under siege and our people were made hostage. The load operations center was also disconnected today.
Our hearts go out to all our consumers who have suffered at large alongside us. We once again regret inconvenience and hope that the necessary authorities will assist us and take appropriate measures in restoring business as usual.
After the gruesome incident of terrorist attack on two (02) buses at Banaras Chowk which resulted in the death of ten (10) innocent persons and injuries to over twenty (20) persons, MQM announced Yum-E-Sog (mourning) late last night.
In addition to this, Karachi Traders Association (KTA) and Karachi Road Transport Association (KRTA) have also decided to keep the markets closed and public transport off the roads. Since morning transport has been scanty and markets and petrol pumps are closed.
Few incidents of firing have been reported in Golimar and Baldia resulting in deaths / injuries. Since morning July 08 youngsters have been observed stopping vehicular movement in Gulshan, Bahadurabad, Clifton, DHA Korangi Road, PECHS, Shaheed Millat Road, Garden F.B. Area, Azizabad, Nazimabad and North Nazimabad, therefore, play safe by restricting movements.
TODAY 28 06 2011 All Karachi Traders Union (AKTI) will stage a protest rally at 1600 hrs from Khaliq Dina Hall on M.A. Jinnah Road to CM House against the load shedding and over billing. KESC Solidarity Committee will also participate in this protest rally. Subsequently this rally may also proceed to the Headquarters of the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) in the Gizri, neighborhood of Clifton Cantonment.
The above mentioned event has a high potential to cause significant traffic around PIDC and Clifton/ Gizri area.
everyone in Karachi, specially in mentioned localities are advised to resort to caution and avoid the routes mentioned above.
The Karachi Electric Supply Company has made alternative arrangements for payment of monthly electricity bills for those customers who have not received physical bills around their usual due date, given interruptions caused in the regular process by the union miscreants.
The KESC has developed this system as a supplementary support to facilitate the customers who might not receive their monthly printed bills before due date because of the union miscreants blocking distribution of bills and attacking the utility’s bill distributors. At several places the union miscreants snatched and tore up the customers’ bills that the distributing personnel had taken to deliver in different localities. At the same time, the newly devised methods of bill payment would also remain as permanent support feature of the KESC to receive bills through these channels in normal circumstances in future as well if the customers may find it convenient.
The KESC has drawn five easy methods for the convenience of customers which will be available henceforth besides the normal way of using printed bills.
First is to visit the utility’s official website, www.kesc.com.pk and enter the 13-digit account number to retrieve a duplicate copy of the current electricity bill which can be printed and can be presented at all banks for making payment. The banks have been taken into confidence about this measure and they have circulated the instruction to all branches for acceptance of duplicate bill.
Second way is to directly go to the offices of NADRA, NIB Bank branches, Easy Paisa outlets, UBL Omni Banking and 1-Link ATMs, and present the 13 digit account number. These outlets would retrieve bill details and provide a payment receipt of the bill to the customer.
Thirdly, the customers who do not receive their monthly bills, can telephone the KESC call centre 118 and follow the automated system to retrieve a duplicate copy of the bill. They can pay their bills through this duplicate.
Fourth way is to email customer’s 13-digit number to the ID:firstname.lastname@example.org after which they will receive an electronic copy of their bill which can be printed and presented to the bank for payment.
Fifthly, the customers familiar with online payment can use their existing online banking services where most banks will provide bill details before allowing payments.
For many years now, even before few people were even admitting we have a “Taliban-Jehadi” mindset issue I was one of those lone souls over internet voicing my concern on the growing TALIBAN-Jehadi mindset. When I often use the word Jehadi mindset people misquote it as targeted towards only some conservative Mullahz or Militant organizations
This is not the case. Words like “jehad” and “talib” have a +ve literal meaning but it’s unfortunate that one has no other way but to use the same words to point out a particular mindset in society which is hell bent upon eliminating every opposing view point. I have been at the forefront at KMB on criticizing militancy be it any party or group but my TARGET is not just groups but a MINDSET. This mindset is related to the idea of rejection of “difference of opinion”. After PNS Mehran attack PAKISTAN agencies, the historical GOD FATHERS of terrorism in PAK and especially the formation of MILITANT groups for their vested interests have first time taken the brunt of “taste of their own medicine” at a BIG level. It’s sad that they had to reach this low to understand what a snake they have fed for decades and if they don’t stop harboring militantly for one pretext or other i.e “Strategic Depth” or “Good Taliban – Bad Taliban theory” PAKISTAN will continue to go down the hill. However, for now, this Frankenstein Monster has penetrated so much deep in our society that every TOM DICK and HARRY has become a judge of everyone’s faith. And to convince society on a particular “opinion” different methods are being applied, one such you can see in this video. How come the local police doesn’t know whats being thrown out of these loudspeakers? If terrorism has to be rooted out, the main question is not the guy who is spreading hate speech but the “lack of action” by the LAW. What is that “mindset” which has made our society “happily” and “conveniently” agree to let such speeches vomited? That mindset is the Question.

Today the Ulema Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamat, previously known as Sipahe Sahaba Pakistan and Jamat Ud Dawa, will take out a rally from Numaish Chowrangi, M.A. Jinnah Road up to Karachi Press club at 1500 hrs. Keeping in view yesterday’s targeted killings of the sector in-charge of Sipahe Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) and an activist of Sunni Tahreek (ST) in North Nazimabad and Ranchor Lines, the above mentioned rally has a high potential to cause traffic disruption and violence.
