Security Alert (Protests)

As you are already aware that PPP Sind had announced a wheel jam strike to protest against SC’s declaration that the appointment of Mr Deedar H Shah as Chairman NAB null and void. An appeal was also made to public to close their businesses and offices etc. After the announcement violence was reported from various parts of Karachi in which motorcyclists were observed firing indiscriminately in an effort to force closure of shops and markets. In a late night broadcast Sind Education Minister Pir Mazhar ul Haq, announced that all government and private education institutions will remain closed on Friday.

Last night’s violence/ disturbance resulted in five dead, ten injured and about seven busses burnt. This morning firing has stopped, private vehicles, taxies, rickshaws and lesser number of busses are plying on roads. Even though tension and fear prevails in the City, however no untoward incident has been reported since morning and all areas are open to traffic. It is likely that after the Juma prayers PPP activists and Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamat (ASWJ) workers may take out protest rallies.

It has been learnt that the leadership of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamat (ASWJ) has decided to make an announcement to hold protest rallies and to also observe mourning day on Friday, March 11, 2011 against the targeted assassinations of Moulana Mehmood Ahmed Madni and his son in Karachi.

Localized and low scale protests are expected in some areas of Clifton Town, Saddar Town, New Karachi Town, and Gulshan Town, particularly after the Juma prayers.
