Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah, on the demand of a segment of fishermen, has announced lifting ban on fishing for one month in June amidst annoyance by a larger portion of the community which considers June and July as the breeding season for fish.

However, the spokesman for Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum said the community people have already stopped fishing from May 15 to allow fish breeding. He said greedy people have been using harmful nets, killing hatchlings during the season, which may result in wiping out fish stocks from the country. He said the community living along the 350-km Sindh coast and inland water bodies usually avoid fishing during these two months.

He said not only Pakistan but Indian fishermen also stop fishing for these two months.

He said they have been demanding of the government to pay at least Rs3,000 as stipend to each crew member for these two months so that they could meet their needs smoothly during the season.

The fishermen had raised the matter with provincial Fisheries Minister Zahid Ali Bhurgari and Fishermen Cooperative Society (FCS) administration, which approached the Sindh Chief Minister to resolve the matter on priority basis.
