Thrill ride

We see this scene quite frequently on the streets. While hanging and dangling on vans and buses might be a thrilling experience for the kids, it’s a nightmare for the parents. Even though I also used to travel like that when I was a kid, but now when I see them, it sends shivers down my spine. What if one of those lose the grip on the handle? What if they aren’t standing secure and they slip? What if the driver suddenly stops the vehicle and loses control?

November 9, 1999: 8 buses are heading from IBA towards Hawkesbay. Nearing Maruipur the buses slow down, each bus with both entrance doors open. A girl stands up from the back seat, makes her way forward. The bus slows, she is standing near the front door, the bus brakes, she loses balance and falls on her back onto the road. She notes in time to see te rear wheel of the bus approaching: it will drive over her legs. she can’t get up, having fallen hard. she rolls on her side and pulls her leg up. the bus, turns sideways too, and the rear wheels go over her bony skeletal body, crushing her ribs. people in the bus try telling the driver to stop as soon as she loses her balance, but the loud music and cheer of people is incomprehended by teh driver. he stops when he feels something come under the bus. the people come outside and lift her up. she’s bleeding. five seconds later she lets out a whimper, shuts her eyes and breathes her last.

she was my classfellow. and such incidents still fall on deaf ears. its worse, since children do not understand the extent of loss, or what exactly does becoming (God forbid) a vegetable, or parting from Earth mean.
