The airport.

I’ve just come back from a weekend in Lahore, and having had the worst flights ever with spaced out airport staff, I think I’ll stick to a train. Or go by foot if necessary. By car wouldve been an option but the recent petrol price hike makes me think that wouldnt be an advisable option.

Anyhoo, getting back to the gist of the story. I reached the karachi airport at around 6:40 AM, which is usually a quiet time at the airport. But this time around, things were quite different. The check in counters were overflowing to the extent that they wouldn’t let more than 3 people wait in line for the boarding passes, they refused to help me with my luggage, despite the fact that I was wearing wrist braces on both arms and in general were quite rude. The book store at the departure lounge has a fairly nice collection of books for sale, which are moderately priced, but despite the sign on his stall that debit cards were accepted there, I had to go through the following conversation:

Huma: You do take debit cards, right?
Shopkeeper: Yes.
Huma: *hands over debit card*
Shopkeeper: *swipes the card* This isnt a credit card.
Huma: Of course its not, its a debit card!
Shopkeeper: *tries again*
Huma: *compares debit card in hand to picture at the shop and cant find any differences*
Shopkeeper: Can you pay in cash?
Huma: grr.

All that aside, I think we really need a bigger airport, especially after I heard a rumor that 2 more domestic airlines will commence operations by early next year. Mr. CM?

Because the people in Lahore are illetrate & uncultured. Tou can imaging a shopkeeper calling a debit card , a credit card!. Its so funny. Maybe people in Lahore are not that familier with cards. A recent survey told that karachi has the highest number of credit & debit card users :):)

Yeah real nice mohummed. Just how exactly is Lahore uncultured care to explain? It’s probably the most cultured city in all of Pakistan! And considering the fact this incident occured in KARACHI Airport you should rethink again who’s illetrate and uncultured…

As for this extension of Karachi Airport it’s not necessary at all. Infact it dosen’t make sense; most of the air carriers have switched operations to Lahore such as Lufthansa and Thai. British and Cathay Pacific have plans to extend to Lahore and KLM has been researching a Lahore-Islamabad-Amsterdam service. It’s very likely that at certain times of the day Karachi Airport gets very busy and it’s very likely this person landed during rush hour, which explains the long lineups.

Actually Mohammed, this is the second time you have taken a jab at other cities of Pakistan. Why can’t we think of Pakistan first and Karachi second??? After reading this, i am sure you are one of those who also have issues within Karachi… for instance DHA versus the rest of the Karachi… am i right?

    ha ha
    huma thats a hilarious stiuation.
that reminds me the time when i came to USA and started working at gas station to earn my tuition
in begining i was really confused with credit and debit thing…and some times i took me so long to.charge
that..i usually gather bunch of 10-15 people waiting to pay…but with time i got usedto with it…
so the point is that the poor guy at store might be a new comer…and might be in learning phase
.. and also paying by checking card is not really common in karachi
…so give this trend some time ….to become a part of our society

SD: The landing cjarges @ Karachi airport are high thats why some of the carriers have switched to lahorer & ialamabad. & the case that the airport needs to be extended is right. it should be extended as it is the busiest airport of pakistan.

    @ mohummed
    i m also from karachi…and i love karachi but
i think you are now crossing the limits….
you behaviour is becoming a disgrace for karachites… you have no right to judge any one
on the basis of their ethnic origion….and throw
immoral comments….if you have any kinda problem with them keep it to your circle and discus over there but do not broadcast them on public sites
i request you plz plz stop doing this……….
i bet if you do it any where in USA you could be easily scued

Mohammad your not making sense; on the one hand you say the high landing fees are causing the air carriers to leave Karachi and opt for Lahore and at the sametime your saying it’s the most busiest in Pakistan. Infact, Karachi Airport is not the busiest airport in Pakistan but now is Lahore since the construction of the new terminal. More international carriers are serving Lahore than Karachi mainly because it’s lies over a major air route (Middle East/Europe to Far East vice versa). Before hurling ignorant remarks I suggest you actually do some research on what your trying to debate.

    @ Mohammad….
dude…we are all from the same country, so cut it with the city priorities and get something realistic to talk about..

    @ Reducing traffic from QAI….
id like to mention here that there are 2 issues here.
1 being the high landing and parking fuel and other charges at the QAI (Quaid e Azam International)….yes, they are indeed very very very high!!!

did u know that a certain private airline that has been in operation for over 6 years now has been deferring the amount endlessly? its acutally run into hundreds of million sof rupees now and thats for the last 2-3 years only….so yes..they are high…

about airlines shifting to LHR for the ME/Europe to Far east and vice versa, i believe that KHI serves the ME route better, LHR might be station of choice for Europe, but there are overflight issues with India and Afghanistan, which has to be kept into consideration.

If the airlines actually even took a transit in KHI, they’d get a lot lot more passengers, but then again, Int’l carriers cant do domestic business…..(i might be wrong on this one)

dont sleep just now, the post has ended…
