SECOND US PHYSICIAN TEAM HEADS TO EARTHQUAKE ZONE

APPNA physicians to work in US Army MASH hospital

In a humanitarian response to the massive suffering and unprecedented death of 70,000 Pakistani earthquake victims , a multidisciplinary medical team of US physicians is to leave on Sunday Oct 23rd, 2005 for Pakistan via New York. The team consists of medical and surgical specialists such as neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists, a psychiatrist and internists. Four final year US medical students, a registered nurse and non medical support staff also will accompany this group. The doctors are members of Association of Pakistani Physicians of North America (APPNA) and Islamic Medical Association of North America (IMANA).

The first team which left past Sunday comprised of the Co-chair of APPNA Social Welfare and Disaster Relief Committee (Retired USAF Lt.Col) Dr. Afzal Arain and President elect Dr. Abdul Rashid Piracha, neurosurgeon Dr. Saeed Bajwa and transplant surgeon Dr. Saeed Akhtar an APPNA member based in Islamabad. Members are already performing orthopedic surgeries and other life saving medical interventions such as fighting infections from injuries, dehydration and complications of hypothermia. Post traumatic stress disorder and depression resulting from the tragedy will also be addressed.

The first team has within one week set up collaboration procedures between APPNA, its component APPNA Sehat and other NGOs like Hidaya Foundation (USA), Human Development Foundation (USA), Edhi Foundation, PIMA, Islamic Relief and others. US physicians are working in additional operating rooms made available at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad. Other collaborative arrangements exist with the Islamabad Poly Clinic, Military Hospital, Rawalpindi Medical College and Ayub Medical College in Abbotabad. APPNA has donated a pneumatic surgical drill to Ayub Medical College, Abbotabad and completely equipped three new operating rooms at PIMS to be used by US physicians.

Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad is the collecting point for medical relief equipment and personnel going from USA. A step down unit has been set up near Shifa Hospital so as to make acute care beds available.

For the purposes of supply of medical equipment and medicines, three warehouses have been set up in Houston, New York and Chicago. Pakistan International Airlines has permitted extra cargo to fly to Pakistan for further dissemination. Many members of the traveling team are carrying supplies with them so as to save time in distribution channels. Physician assignments in earthquake zones are already in place

US Ambassador Ryan C. Crockerís intervention has facilitated the placement of US physician members of APPNA to work in US Armyís MASH hospital to be set up in a few days in Muzaffrabad.

APPNA is a not for profit organization. The Association is organized for educational and scientific purposes, including for such purposes, the making of distributions to organizations which qualify as exempt organizations under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954.

Donations for the Earthquake Relief Fund can be made online at appna.org.
