Google and CIA?

Am I the only one who finds it disturbing that the first link for a Google search on Pakistan is a link to the CIA website?

    Huma

There is nothing to worry about really if you see that link right on top. The CIA has been mantaining this world factobook for several years for literally every country around the world. Intelligence is their business and it is actually quite informative if you go through the details. I remember we used to go through this factbook to help us prepare for GK questions during IBA entrance exams.

At the same time…their recent performance has been a total disaster. Poor George Tenet :-(

yup. you’ll get the factbook for pretty much every country you google. it’s a fairly informative review of the country and regularly updated.

Technically speaking, google’s search engine technology works on a patented technique called PigeonRank├┤, developed by Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford University.

In simple terms, the way google works and “finds” the results .. is based on popularity, hits, queries and many other factors. It may be called one of the best search technologies used today, but it definitely is not the best. Any aware webmaster can easily play with the way the results are shown on the top and get their site listed on the top.

Any result that shows up on the top rank in a search engine is not the guarantee for being the best or only relevant result. Mostly good researchers take a look at first few pages of results to find out whats really relevant to what they are searching for. Thas called smart surfing : )

For example, if you search for same word “Pakistan” again in google. You will see that few official links like PTV and Radio Pakistan and even official govt link http://www.pakistan.gov.pk/ appears on page 2 in the search and some links like Pakistan Telecom even appear on page 5 and further.

And lastly to answer your question, they made the web, they made the Internet and it is their technology. We cant be on top of them using their technologies. They will always be on the top as long as we use their ways of living our lives. We cant really blame them, infact we should be thankful we atleast are listed on their space and servers for free.
