Monkey business

Since you are too inconsiderate to give money to humans, a kid with a monkey is bound to melt your heart and you will empty your pockets to feed the poor animal. That seems to be the philosophy for these “beggars”. I really hate it when they leave the monkey on the hood of my car and it scratches my car like there is no tomorrow. That makes me want to shoot the monkey (and the kid), instead of giving him money. One thing that makes me wonder is how these monkeys survive Karachi weather, since they are apparently brought down from Northern areas.

One of the little appreciated ‘techniques’ of these monkeywalas is to frighten the ladies (and even men) in the rickshaws by subtly bringing the animal close to the passenger and the frightened or yucking passenger quickly hands over a coin of Rs 5 or even a 10 rupee note to make sure the pest goes away quickly with his monkey.

For those outside Pakistan, there is an open interface between the passengers and the monkeywalas because there are no doors in a rickshaw, for those who haven’t seen one, click here
