Vulture in Karachi are the days when Karachi had quite a few vultures in our Karachi skies. A few days back my father an avid golfer spotted this vulture sitting on the side of a green near Karachi Golf Club. There were a number of black crows also circling the area as if they had spotted a prey. The golfers continued to play assuming that there must be a dead animal around the area. A few hours later they noticed that the Vulture was sitting lazily in the same position and discovered it was hungry, weak and tired, the crows were actually hunting him down. The illiterate caddy’s of the club were planning to sell this animal to any hawker, being an endangered species my father stepped in to help save its life and hand them over to WWF for proper preservation and protection.

We quickly brought the animal home and started feeding him, for two days he ate slowly and in 2-3 days has now recovered enough to actually spread his wings wide. In a day or so we plan to release this vulture to the WWF preservation society, they tell us that there are only 6-7 surviving vultures in Pakistan. We continue to take pictures of this beautiful creautre everyday and he continues to surprise us daily, this animal is practically 3 feet tall fully extended and I think the wing-span is close to 7 feet wide. What a beautiful creature.

Update: A few more pictures can be found on my blog @ Vulture in Karachi

I have actually never seen a Vulture in Karachi (or pakistan), despite living here all my life. Goes to show exactly how rare this bird is around here. Great work saving it, Doc and lovely photos on the blog.

Like Misha, I’ve never seen a vulture here either. According to a passage in a Bapsi Sidhwa book, they became extinct here after the Parsi community in Karachi decreased in number. While that may not be entirely true, it is something to wonder about that nothing’s been done to ensure the survival of this bird. Kudos to you for saving its life :)
