Karachi Photographers Club

I am starting a photography club for anyone who is into photography. Whether you are an experienced photographer or a starter, you are all welcome to join.

The basic purpose for this is to create opportunities for photographers to get more experience and learn from each other. Personally speaking, photography has become one my passions but I am usually so busy in other things that I hardly get time to use my camera. Plus I want to improve my skills by talking to other talented photographers and learn from their techniques, and maybe go out on a photography trip with them.

So here is how it will work. We will create a mailing list for discussion and sharing photos. Every month or so, we will plan a meetup and take pictures of well known (and not so well known) places. I have other ideas as well but I want to see how successful it is going to be before advancing further.

So if you live in Karachi and want to join, leave a comment with your name and email address, tell me a little bit about yourself, your experience (professional or amateur). You can also email me directly at umar(at)umarsiddiqi(dot)com.

I suggest creating a flickr group instead of a mailing list. That way all the photos and discussions are all in the same place.

Hey camera enthusiasts! if you take good photos of Karachi, please remember to tag them with Karachi if you post them on Flickr.com so all of us can view em too. Any pictures of Karachi mean a lot to us overseas Karachiites. Also, it would be cool if you can take photos of underconstruction projects in the city as well, such as flyovers, parks, shopping malls, apartments etc.
    Thanks and good luck!

ZAG, I suggest buy from the Canon dealer in Karachi. You will get the warranty.

Otherwise Regal is the best place.. without warranty.. hey but I heard that bigs shops at Regal camera market give their own warranty; not too sure…

But S2 you intend to buy.. It would be close to EOS350D (dSLR) so why not buy a dSLR..

  14. Zag (unregistered) on December 26th, 2005 @ 11:28 am

Zain: Thanks, but since it will be an expensive thing, i want to spend a little more and get a Canon warranty. I went to check out the cameras at the canon dealer, however, they didn’t had the S2 in stock, but i checked out the A610 (the 5 mp bro of A620) and Pro1. I was floored by Pro1. Although it was the most expensive one, but it had 8MP, 7X Optical Zoom plus 4X digital, it had the remote which i need, plus the biggest advantage, it can save in RAW and TIFF format as well for those ultra detailed pics and it has a hot shoe. I know the zoom isn’t as much as S2, but still 7X is no slouch plus the 8mp will give me far more pixels to crop as against S2’s 5mp. However, the reviews that i read of the Pro1 said that it has a slow AF speed. which can be a major drawback. i loved the features of A620/610, especially the on screen grid to align the pic, and the 9 point AFiF, but it lacks the other things that Pro1 and S2 offers. All in all, i don’t think i can find all the features that i want in a single camera, so i will have to compromise somewhere…

for the slr, i did checked out the EOS-350, but the changable lens and all plus the fact that i am not that much of an advanced user yet put me off that.

    so now it’s between S2 and Pro1…. :)

  15. zain (unregistered) on December 26th, 2005 @ 1:46 pm

In my opinion, S2 would be good I guess (one of my friend has it and pic quality is excellent).

Keep me updated on the final choice! and post some pics soon :) Happy shooting.

I own a S410 (IXUS 430); his younger bro is available here S400.

I am soon going to buy EOS350D or the Nikon D70S.

  16. Zag (unregistered) on December 26th, 2005 @ 3:56 pm

Yeah, i am leaning towards S2, although the lack of remote control is putting me off. Also, the fact that it isn’t available here right now, so i can’t take it in my hand and check it out. I have to do that before i make my final decision. Maybe i’ll go check out at Regal and they have one…. I was all set for Pro1, but then found out a couple of minor things on the internet about it, first of all, it uses Digic as compared to S2’s Digic 2, which makes it slower also i found out that Pro1 has a fault which makes dust creep easily into the lens. This has really freaked me out as Karachi is not the cleanest of cities and i will be using my camera outdoors mostly. So i guess S2 is the final choice. I will have to use short self timers where i need remote.

as for the EOS-350, i checked it out, but decided that i still haven’t grown up as a photographer to justify buying a dSLR yet…. do lemme know how it is when u buy it though… maybe my next upgrade… :)

  17. su (unregistered) on December 26th, 2005 @ 9:12 pm

    no nikon people here?!

  18. zain (unregistered) on December 27th, 2005 @ 3:08 pm

Hey SU, yes I like the new D50 but it has limited features compare to D70S and D70S is very very expensive and bulky..

Their store is very near to my office at Shahrah-e-Faisal.. Which cam you have?

  19. Zag (unregistered) on December 27th, 2005 @ 4:08 pm

I think shez the one who wants to buy FM65. btw, what happened with the club?

  22. jawwad jafri (unregistered) on December 27th, 2005 @ 7:02 pm

well i dont have the best cameras around …my digicam is orite VC3210….its gives amazing pictures in daylight and most of the times pathetic ones at night…today for no reason..i bought an OLYMPIA DL2000A…i dunno why i did it…its a 35mm camera.. but why did i buy it????

  23. Zag (unregistered) on December 27th, 2005 @ 10:08 pm

umar: Cool…. *getting all giddy* ;)

  24. su (unregistered) on December 28th, 2005 @ 10:52 pm

yeah i am the one with fm 10 and want a f65 now..:) ..what can i say i am old school…into manual cameras..the technique and control on results is just FAB!!

  25. Zag (unregistered) on December 29th, 2005 @ 9:45 am

But canons also give you manual control to go with the auto….

  26. su (unregistered) on December 29th, 2005 @ 10:55 am

hey ZAG. yeah i know….the thing is that i ahve used nikons before and find them to be more user friendly…fm 10 has been my favourite…i have got great experience with it..every thing is purely manual shutter speed, exposure, painstaking but alot of fun..so i am kinda attached to the brand..my next hunt is for
f -65 ..:)i have got a digital sony also but i hardly ever use it… digi cams are alot easier to use..hence there isnt a challenge involved…:)

  27. Zag (unregistered) on December 29th, 2005 @ 12:27 pm

Ahhh… i see.. well i m the lazy kind who just likes to take good pics without paying much heed to the challenge…. i lve digicams cuz they give an instant feedback and i know instantaneously whether i have messed up or not…

  28. zain (unregistered) on December 29th, 2005 @ 5:43 pm

SU – there is an invention called dSLR

  29. Zag (unregistered) on December 29th, 2005 @ 6:26 pm
