To ban or not to ban

Sadly, it seems that the only way to curb or control something is to ban it. What it doesnt understand are two very important factors.

1. When you ban something, it onoly arouses curiousity amongst those unaffected by the ban. They go out to see what it is and whether it was actually “ban-worthy” or not.

2. When its banned, its cool!

The Da Vinci Code has just been banned in Pakistan, and as I heard this morning, some 11 Indian states as well.

An interesting note: When blogspot was banned in the wake of the caricatures, the PTA forgot to ban the website of Jyllands Posten!! The site is available even today (I re-checked before publishing this post) despite two brief moments of relief to the Blogspot ban!

Amongst all the banning madness, they announced that a ban on 2-stroke risckshaws would be going into effect soon.

Ban away! They ban, people protest & suffer, govt changes and the ban is lifted. The typical lifecycle of a ban :S

Banning the movie only won’t work. Ban the book as well, better burn it.

Yeah I bought the movie yesterday just to have it in my collection, when ever there is a controversy associated with a movie, It’s sales go up.. BTW there was a black day observed by Awami Himayat Tehreek yesterday against the presence of blasphemous cartoons over the internet (Visit: http://www.dawn.com/2006/06/05/local20.htm ) What are they planning to do ? Ban the whole Internet before they ban the very site which started it all (Jyllands Posten )

Corrections: What are they planning to do ? Ban the whole Internet before they ban the very site (Jyllands Posten )which started it all in the first place.

The DAWN report says the movie was banned on the request of christian and muslim Pakistani Groups.
Isn’t this how it should be? Goverment serving the wishes of the people.

watched the movie in dubai… amazing doesnt define it… it was mind blowing… but i dont see why it was banned in pakistan… sure it does conflict with christian belief but it has nothing that would upset muslims.

  11. Checkmate (unregistered) on June 7th, 2006 @ 1:43 pm

@ umar, some muslims take offence at the theory that Hazrat Essa (A.S) was married and had children. They are upset at that. And as far as I am concerned we are so used to blindly following religious crap any one is feeding us, we just don’t think for ourselves. We just let the Mullah and in this case the Christian clergy tell us what we should see or not see.

I don’t know why we think that our iman is so fragile that it will be harmed by a work of fiction.

Talking of bans, can someone help me i have recently made a blog on blogspot. I can log in from blogspot but i cannot view my blog.

I watched this movie three weeks ago and I guess its the right decision to ban it. Not because it hurt me , just because we could show world that we respect all the prophets. I send the link to many Christians/Jewish friends here that Muslims don’t get upset only when the cartoons get printed , they also get upset when some one shows disrespect to Jesus.

Besides that some things are symbolic and this ban is just symbolic, how many cinemas were gonna show this movie in Pakistan ?? I guess not a single one. Regarding DVD release, we all know that govt. just could not stop it so chill please. I am not sure that why do some people got offened with this ban ? Its not about Mullahs or Priests , its about the respect towards prophets and their followers. We even don’t know the actual history so any one could say any thing but if a thing goes against common person belief then it should be banned. So simple, dont hurt the people is basic rule of life.

@Umar, what was mind blowing in movie ?? How could the fiction be mind blowing ? And why would it upset Muslims, I am sorry for your ignorance.

@Checkmate: I really dont appreciate any one showing disrespect towards religious people. They might have different ideals but who knows who is right? How about I write a fiction book about your mom making love with his brother and publish it and then make a movie and release it, would you get upset. Sure you would but you should not , its just fiction. Even fiction would hurt because you love your mom , try to generalize your love towords your mom to a love which some people have for their prophets. And Muhammad PBUH said that you could not be a true muslim unless I am not more dear to you than any thing else.

No hard feeling checkmate, its just business and nothing personal. Its open forum and I would take all your arguments if you have any , I guess you are new here so you might not know me. I am cool with all curses.

Regarding movie, I was really disappointed with overall direction and acting. Total waste of 9.75 $

  14. Checkmate (unregistered) on June 8th, 2006 @ 11:43 am

@ POO POO Head, I am all for religious freedom. I don’t say that we should take something sacred and make fun of it. But what gets to me is that we don’t make the decision ourselves. If the govt bans something we have to see it, if the Mullah rejects it we have to hate it. What I was trying to say is that we need to think for ourselves. I don’t appreciate anyone making fun of any religion. But I wish we would think, read, and educate ourselves about something before accepting or rejecting it.. If it seemed like I said it is OK to joke about Jesus (S.A)but not Muhammed (PBUH)then please let me clarify it is not true.

And don’t talk about my mom like that again. I’ll burn your effigy in public :-)

  15. nonnie (unregistered) on June 8th, 2006 @ 2:07 pm

Why don’t all of you just burn allthe books in Pakistan that you find offensive. Lets not even TALK about anything religious in films or books ever again. You people are so GODDAMNED self rightieous and full of false pride it’s sickning. You think if you fucking grow a beard, or wear a veil on your head thats all there is to being a muslim. Tell me the last time you did something to help the poor, when was the last time you were kind to your fellow Human. You are mean hearted when you judge others.LOOKATYOURSEL

  16. Checkmate (unregistered) on June 8th, 2006 @ 4:00 pm

@ nonnie, you forget to burn all the books we find offensive, we will actually have to read them first. So understand your frustration and anger. Didn’t you know that if you wear a hijab or grow a beard, put haji in front of your name you are a certified true Muslim. We don’t even read Koran with understanding. we leave it to the Mullah to explain his version of Islam to us.

  17. nonnie (unregistered) on June 9th, 2006 @ 3:27 am

Yes checkmate you speak my heart. But that poopoo head said that the H.P. said to be a true muslim the Holy Prophet should be the”closest thing to you”. Where the hell did poopoo read that? I have read the Quran with meaning and I never read THAT. I guess I’m not a true muslim because I consider ALLAH not HIS Messenger the closest thing to me. poopoohead you worship a person and you want to control others. First know what the hell your saying. You spread lies and want to silence others.GO FUCK YOURSELF.

  18. Poo Poo Head (unregistered) on June 9th, 2006 @ 9:12 am

@checkmate: I am thankful to you that you took my message very lightly irrespective of the fact that it had some annoying material. I appreciate your sense of humor too.
First of all , let me tell you that I am not “mullah” from any where but I still find this term very very dis respectful. Its just like name calling so please avoid this terminology. If we go by your logic then we should check every fact by ourself , why do we seek doctor help, why dont we try every medicine and see if its working. No my friend , that is just not possible. We would always need professionals be it medical or computer or religious. Govt. is there to guide us and we are ourself government, people like us are government. Once again some thinsg are just symbolics and bans are also like that.

@Nonnie: I apologize if I hurt you my friend. I am sure that you have read the Koran and I have no doubt about your I’man. But what I quoted is the very authentic Had’is[you could ask any one here]. It did not imply at all that you should worship Muhammad PBUH. I would suggest you to do research on that and then please post any arguments. The way you have expressed your self does not speak very high of your self. I am just replying you because I do not want you to be in any illusion, if the argumnet was about any worldly thing, I would have definitely ignored you. But then again this reminded me of Imam Shaf’ee saying.

“I debated a scholar and beat him. Then I debated a layman and that layman beat me – he had no knowledge of the principles and texts. I had nothing to say.”

  19. nonnie (unregistered) on June 9th, 2006 @ 10:48 am

you are the one living in an illusion. Fisrt you go and see the movie yourself and then you say ban it.Idiot, you are no scholar what gives you the right to choose for others? And the Hadith was writen by people After the Prophets death. The problem is that people like you are actually in the misconception that your better than others. And belive no one unless he follows your religionsay:”True guidence is the guidance of ALLAH…say:All bounties are in the handof ALLAH

  20. nonnie (unregistered) on June 9th, 2006 @ 11:03 am

That is from the Quran. Icould go on and on about this. The Hadith did not come from GOD. It is comptelely man made. Not to say I don’t think its valid but its a book written by people long after the Prophets death. I know what the Hadith is . Your living in a dream world and you are a HYPOCRITE as well.” If ALLAH helps you, none can overcome you:if he forsakes you, who is there after that that can help you? In ALLAH than let Belivers put their trust”.-Quran Who gave you the authority to decide what others should see?

  21. Checkmate (unregistered) on June 9th, 2006 @ 11:17 am

@ poo poo head, I check a doctors credentials before I go to him/her. And will use the word Mullah, becasue no word describes these hypocrites better. The only thing they have achieved is to misguide, propagate their own distorted version of Islam. They are the ones who are responsible for the Hudood ordinance and the blasphemy law. Both these laws have raped the civil, religious and personal rights of everyone living in Pakistan. If the term Mullah sounds disrecpectful it is meant to be just that.

  22. Checkmate (unregistered) on June 9th, 2006 @ 11:21 am

@ poo poo head, I check a doctors credentials before I go to him/her. Unfortunately, I can’t do the same for the imam of a masjid, because they print their own degrees and then distribute it amongst themselves. What would you call a Imam who in his friday Khutba tells an equally illitrate audience, that if a man does not pray 5 times a day in a Masjid his Nikah will be nullified !!! And I will use the word Mullah, becasue no word describes these hypocrites better. The only thing they have achieved is to misguide/divide the masses and propagate their own distorted version of Islam. They are the ones who are responsible for the Hudood ordinance and the blasphemy law. Both these laws have raped the civil, religious and personal rights of everyone living in Pakistan. If the term Mullah sounds disrecpectful it is meant to be just that.

“So glory be to Allah, when ye reach the eventide and when ye rise in the morning; Yea to HIM be praise in the heavens and on earth; and in the late afternoon and when the day begins to decline. It is HE who brings out the living from the dead, and brings out the dead from the living, and WHO gives life to the earth after it is dead: and thus shall ye be broght out form the dead. Among HIS signs is this HE created you from dust; then behold, ye are men scattered far and wide.

  24. nonnie (unregistered) on June 9th, 2006 @ 11:33 am

“And among his signs is this, that he created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranquility with them, and HE has put love and mercy between your hearts: verily in that are signs for those who reflect. And among HIS signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and variations in your languages and your colors: verily in that are signs for those who know…” It goes on in its imense beauty in the Quran in Ar-Rum. read this and live the” book of truth” POOPOO

  25. Poo Poo Head (unregistered) on June 9th, 2006 @ 11:35 am

Nonnie : Please just justify that Koran is in valid state. Not that I dont beleive in its validity, how could you prove that it exists in its true state. Dont quote Koran please , it would be a cyclic proof. I am up for next 2 hours so I guess I would be able to reply one or twice more. I am not deciding what other should see by the way, I am just telling you what I do see and by the way this idiot watched this movie long time ago and he paid for that.

  26. nonnie (unregistered) on June 9th, 2006 @ 11:55 am

I don’t understand your question. Please clarify. By the way why shouldn’t I quote the Quran only you can quote from the hadith? The Quran even by Cristian scholars point of view, is proved that not one word has been changed for 1500 years. Read the book The Clot in the Quran it has been studied by doctors and scientists because it describes the correct sequence of the formation of human life in the womb. There was no machines to know that 1500 years ago.

  27. nonnie (unregistered) on June 9th, 2006 @ 11:57 am

By the way I fully agree with checkmate. The mullas should all go fuck themselves too.

  28. Poo Poo Head (unregistered) on June 9th, 2006 @ 12:08 pm

Checkmate: First of all we should be rational in our logic. Just cool down and think once again what have you said:How many times you have asked dr. to show his degree. Why dont you argue that doctors teach in medical colleges and they distribute degrees. I would say that doctors print degrees and distribute among them. So it nullifies your argument. Better thing would be that when you you go to doctor and you get relief then you believe in his authenticity. If you do not get relief then you change your doctor but you never say that he is a fake doctor , he might not have enough expertise but after all he has credentials. By the way where did you hear that “if a man does not pray 5 times a day in a Masjid his Nikah will be nullified” . I am no more in Pakistan and left it for good long time ago but I still remember the friday khutba of imam sahib and I never ever found any distracting thing. I find it very upsetting when some one say word mullah because all people are not alike and those who are good in them are certainly better then most of us. You just cant generalize things to an extent that the profession become a bad word. I am sure that most of us have seen atleast one or two good religious people so they exist I guess. Regarding Huddod law and blasphemy, I don’t know much but I guess they are in accordance with Shari’a but they are mis used by people and if some law is exploited then solution is not to abort it or modify it. Change the people who are responsible for running it.

By the way I am too “liberal” for Pakistani society but some where in heart I know that I am wrong and I seek Allah’s forgiveness every hour. Its mid night and I am too tired to type now so I would reply tomorrow (not running away :-)

Just keep in mind that its all bsuiness and I have no thing for no one. If some one thinks that I am wrong then please correct me, I would appreciate that

  29. Poo Poo Head (unregistered) on June 9th, 2006 @ 12:19 pm

Nonnie: I put a moot that if you think that Hadith could be wrong then Koran could also be wrong(Allah forbid me). Koran also discusses about life after death , about heaven , about hell , could you prove that ?? No, then those sections could be wrong. The point is that its your belief. You do not believe in Hadith then its fine but that does not make less.

Please go via history of Hadith books how few of those were compiled then please come and discuss. Its just useless if you are not ready to listen to or put any efforts by your self.

Dont abuse or curse please. I am sure you are a person with high intellectual ability so it does not go along with your personality. You could put your arguments in much better way I guess if you just polish your skills.

  30. nonnie (unregistered) on June 9th, 2006 @ 12:28 pm

Why are you putting the Hadith in the same league as the Holy Quran? The Quran talks about heaven and hell and revelations. So. What makes you think I don’t have a Hadith? Why don’t you put as much effort in reading the Holy Quran with MEANING as you do the Hadith? How dare you call yourself a muslim if you put the Hadith before the Quran. And if I curse and smoke thats ok when you are required to answer for me on the day of judgment then worry about that. Till then let me live my life without interference.

  31. nonnie (unregistered) on June 9th, 2006 @ 12:30 pm

By the way poopoo I am sorry for teling you to go fuck yourself. However it may be a good idea to let off some steam. I highly recomend it.

@ poopoo, I heard that with my own ears in a DHA masjid. Have you ever spoken to a madressah student? I have and they are the most unimpressive people ever. There are a handful of scholars who actually know what they are talking about. If it were upto the remaining majority we would still be riding camels. When someone does not know what kind of issues I or any one faces in the 21st century, can you enlighten me how is he supposed to help?

  35. nonnie (unregistered) on June 10th, 2006 @ 11:46 am

By the way POOPOO I don’t understand how you can call yourself “liberal”. You stick up for Mullas who are destroying our country and stopping progress. Plus you can’t even read the Quran with understanding on your own. You need hadith to explain Islam to you. Everything youneed to know is fully packaged in the Quran. The hadith is just a bunch of proverbs and sayings alot of which were fabricated as was proven. The hadith is not documents from GOD. The hadith never existed for hundreds of years after the H.P.’s death. The Quran with UNDERSTANDING is allyou need. No one reads the Quran anymore and then we wonder why muslims are being slaughtered all over the world today. It is written that if we do not act right others will be sent to kill and enslave us muslims. The muslim Empire was the strongest and exsited BEFORE these “hadith” came out. After these hadith were created by people that is when we lost our power. That is our demise.
