Lets make a collaborative effort to describe Karachi

Xia pointed out this very good site, Wikimapiaa project to describe the whole planet Earth“. It was suggested that we look up karachi, and try to identify as many places as possible there, so as to make it a useful reference. I really liked Xia’s idea, and checked out the webiste myself. It uses the Google Maps api to pull up its maps and has various places in karachi marked with rectangles, contributed by users.

Xia suggested we make a collaborative effort, and mark as many places as possible on it. He’s included a shortcut link zooming into karachi to get you started as well. I would go further, and request you all to please post each of the places you’ve marked here on KMB as well. One point to note though, please include only interesting places, and not areas of personal liking such as “my house”.

Once you’ve found the area you want to mark, move your mouse over ‘Wikimapia’ on the top right of your screen and click on “Add a place”. That will generate a resizable rectangle on the screen. Move it around till its excatly over where you want, and click on “Save” which appears just over the rectangle. That will bring up a screen allowing you to enter the name and a description of the place bounded by the rectangle. Click “Ok” and your place will be saved into the system.

Come on people! its time to describe our beloved Karachi!

I’ll start off, i identified
1. Bahria University, Karachi Campus
2. KPT Underpass
3. Karachi Gymkhana
4. FTC Building
5. Boat Basin Food Street

P.S. This would be a great addendum to creating a map for karachi as well as was discussed here.

Note: If you want something which should be shared here, just click on “Suggest a story” and we’ll put it up giving your full credits if it pertains to the spirit of this blog.

One suggestion, do not mark big areas like North Nazimabad Block F etc, keep them small like round about , famous colleges , parks etc

Thats the spirit. Thanks metbloggers. More we find places of interest in karachi, more karachi will become obvious on the map. As far marking the North Nazimabad, if a block can be identified, go identify it. You can mark places inside the marked rectangles. Think about it. What if some Lahori wants to know where block L is located at? This will help him/her in my personal opinion.

    Thanks again people.

Well it seems that most of us have really got into it and are ecstatic with naming everything that can be recognized. But I for one would like to request those, who know Karachi inside out, to at least try to provide some description while naming such places. For instance, I hit upon a locality named “Abdullah Shah Ghazi Mazar” but wouldn’t some description about it add a little more justification to it, especially to those who aren’t from Karachi or even Pakistan. Afterall, the wikimapia’s slogan itself says, “Let’s describe the whole Earth!” not just name it… I would also try to add some description to the already named/established places on wikimapia… This would give a better portrayal of our Karachi… cheers!

    Addy : c’mon now . it’s Adbullah-Shah_Ghazi’s Mazar , exacly how its marked .
    – just messing with you man ..good idea

I have been trying to correct so many of the ill-logical stuff that people have posted on Wikimapia.

Its a global resource and soem of us are psoting stuff like “5 Star CHOWRANGI” now how the hell a European will be able to understand CHOWRANGI? Please be care full in naming stuff, I corrected it to 5 Star Roundabout.. and soo many others tooo

But my personal favourite thus far is “SINDH BAD PARK”, which I have renamed to SINDBAD PARK…

  17. mansoor (unregistered) on July 9th, 2006 @ 1:13 pm

very smart, if you are correcting it from a western perspective, how about leaving it 5-start chowrangi and adding roundabout in brackets, or in the description.

Over here, thats the actual name of the place, and for cultural reasons, lets not deviate from it.

I just marked all the major sections of PAF Base Masroor from its entrance to college. Ah , old days. Could some one have a look at PAF college map in detail. I tried to mark every building but just could not reconginze one or two [new] buildings. I would recommend every one to have a look on my school building[its quite detailed one]. It gave me immense pleasure to have a look at that after so many years. I used to live in lyari by the way.
