Karachi Mass Transit Corridor I

Got his off skyscraper city, posted by none other than our very own SWA.

The city govt. has been given instructions to handout the contract on Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis for a mass transit system between Merewether Tower and Sohrab Goth by the city nazim for as early as August 2006.

Two companies, M-trans (responsible for the Malaysian monorail) and IDC (responsible for Bangkok mass transit system) are under review by the officials for carrying out the project. (Source: dawn)

The tender for the transit system calls for a light rail transport system. Whether this system would be elevated, sharing the road with other traffic, partially or fully underground has yet to be seen. For more information, on what these systems are, check out the skyscraper link.

On a sidenote, the aforementioned corridor is one of the busiest corridors of the world, with as many as four million people travelling up and down its length each day to get to work and back. A fact i’ve heard from a source in the transportation industry. A well designed and operated transit system is much needed there.

Successive governments have been discussing a mass transit system for Karachi for the last 15 years. Every time it is shelved for one reason or another. Let’s hope the project gets off the ground this time, insha Allah.

yea very true asif … if musharaf’s team continues for another term then there are hopes for consistency in such development projects … Karachi badly needs such a mass transit system … there are grid locks throughout the city even if there are few changes frm the norms … i think the govt shud get help frm the indians who have managed to improve the transport within mumbai pretty effecienty , a similar case to karachi.

Well the karachi mass transit project has been in pipeline for years i’ve heard that this project was initiated in the 90’s when Dr.Farooq sattar was the mayor. It was a subway project n ithink japan said it’ll build it n hand it over to the Govt after 5 yrs of making. Those transporters whose buses are on karachi roads pursued the Fed.gov to stop this project so this Project went into the drains.I hope with the new citi govt might pursue our beaurucrats to start this project again cause we are in a great need of a transport system.May GOD help our karachi.Ameen!!!
