Cowasjee on Nehr-e-Khayyam

Cowasjee in this article writes about the famous Nehr-e-Khayyam (the sewerage canal behind boat basin area, the name of this canal never ceases to amuse me), digs history and expresses his concerns against converting it into residential area. This was covered on Karachi metblog back in April.

In my opinion, this so called nehr is a major source of environmental pollution in Clifton. One cannot pass near it without covering his nose. So something has to be done about it, but certainly building residential structures over it would not solve the problem. A better solution would be to cover the canal with concrete slabs and the area be converted into a giant parking lot (we do have parking problem in the area, don’t we?).

Once again, thanks to tee emm for suggestion

the naala’s in clifton are only blocked and clogged because of greed in the zab govt. the land above the naala’s was sold and built over preventing any maintenance to be done in them. now we are paying for it.
