Kara Film Fest – Movie Review “Maut”

On Monday, December 11, as part of the 6th Karafilm Festival, I took a trip to the PIIA to watch “Maut” (Death).

Starring Mohib Mirza and Adnan Shah (the Tipoo charachter from the sitcom “Sab Set Hai”), and directed by Murtaza Khaliq, the film was SUPPOSED to portray the story of a director, who is tired of the materialistic and unreal world of films and glamour and sets out for a quest to find the ultimate reality.

Driving through the city streets at night, the director (portrayed by Mohib Mirza) runs into a an artist (Adnan Shah). a discussion ensues. Sensing that he has found the right charachter, the director choses to go to the artists home, where they discuss matters pertaining to reality, practicality and unpredictability of life. Eventually the director dies when he tries to poison the artist and the artist mixes up the glasses.

As intrigued as I was to see this movie, I was frankly, quite disappointed at the twist of events, the photography, the lighting and not to mention the lack of expression in both the narratives and the dialogues.

To an extent, many dialogues were fairly predictable and while they debated furiously at the artists home, one was left confused as to what the purpose of the debate was.

I was surprised at how this movie made it to the Kara……but then again…Majajan did too…..so I guess this deserved a chance too.
