    Ashraf Qazi’s ’40 Siparas’

KARACHI (Online) – Federal Education Minister Javed Ashraf Qazi apparently does not know how many ‘Siparas’ are there in the Holy Quran.
On Wednesday responding to a question by a TV anchor of a private TV channel in its morning show, the education minister, who is also retired General of Pak Army and ex-chief of ISI, said that now a student would complete 40 ‘Siparay’ of Holy Quran from Class III to VIII in school and now the children would not need to go to ‘madrassahs’ for learning the Holy Quran. The anchor surprised over the minister apparent ignorance, asked him how many Siparay they would learn, the minister replied 40 ‘Siparay’.
Astonished and surprised over the minister reply, when the lady anchor for the third time said she believed that there were 30 ‘Siparay’ in the Holy Quran, then Javed Ashraf shaking his head apologised and corrected himself by saying, “Oh I am sorry”.

Big deal. Does this oversight make him an apostate, prompting fatwas from the pulpit thick and fast?

The education policy is a substantial issue to be publically discussed, not the Minister’s command of religion.

eheh farrukh, yes it was already mentioned on same forum:>

s a substantial issue to be publically discussed, not the Minister’s command of religion

@jayJay: my friend how will it sound if an 8th grade student is asked to set a paper of engineering?

@Farrukh it was previously mentioned here. But yes you can still discuss his education policy & the deteriorating standard of education.

An honest mistake. Give him a break. Could happen to anyone. Besides, I agree, the post has nothing to do with Karachi.

Reminds me of a slip i made a couple of days back when i remarked to a friend that i don’t pray ‘7 times’ a day. There you go … no one’s going to forgive me!

If you’re going to cast a stone at the man atleast make sure you castigate him for flaws in the (education) system, not religion. He’s a federal education minister(?) – but then again we live in a culture where somebodys business is everybodys business.

hehe, an ex-ISI head and slip of tongue ormistakes. God knows how many secrets he would have revealed to enemy due to his slip of tongue habit.

Don’t get worried, He’s not in ISI anymore so don’t cover him up. You will not be lifted from your homes for telling/accepting truth :-)

Hey Adnan you didn’t tell them that he repeated it 3 times. Did you ?

By the way it can happen to a human that he miss the basics but my concern is his approach towards the education as a whole.

maybe his american master had asked him to introduce 10 more siparas in the syllabus of student… after all every one knows that he gets dictatations from state department for changes in syllabus …

this guy has made lots of bluders while he was a railway minister… and now he is taking the education ministry for a ride… when ever Mush is gone this guy would face the music …

@Doctor: The Koran was not divided into siparas (parts, chapters and all) or ordered in any sequence during the Prophet’s time. These refinements were added during later periods. There is no sanctity therefore attached to the actual numbers of chapters or parts into which the Koran is currently compiled. The Minister’s ignorance on the number of chapters is not a sin warranting his public hanging. Minster Qazi’s performance should be judged on the objective standards, not against any flimsy and emotional yardstick. The command on religion is not a criterion for a federal minister under the Constitution.

Sounds like a dumb mistake. But if he really didnot know that the quran has 30 siparas..Man no doubt our education system is crumbling.

CNN just called barac obama “osama”, John Kerry made fun of the troops instead of Bush ….clearly there is no amount of education or money that will keep blunders out of our every day life. Life would be so boring if noone ever slipped up. He clearly meant no disrespect by it, lets stop hyperventillating.

People here r more worried about a lousy over-blown, man-written, illogical book than 100s of ppl made disappered by Army, carpet bombing in Balochistan, and the list goes on.

Set ur priorities in order, guys !

what qualification did this guy had to be a railway minister or a education minister? well lemme tell you… the sole reason he was awarded these crucial ministries was coz he saved Mush’s neck from a court marshal that would have nipped a dictator in bud back then in 1965.. so Mush had to return the favour some how… so at the expense of pakistani public he
    awarded him portfolios

people like adnan siddiqi should be banned from such discussion forums — i have seen him carrying out his preaching and sermonising at pakistaniat as well

ok we all can admit it was a slip of the tongue but slip into 3 times means absentmindedness. Oh Cmon he wasnt asked to recall the basic code of conduct in the army any 3rd grader knows that the Holy Quran has 30 siparahs/chapters n the Minister would also know this fact but my point is that should we assess the mental Aptitude of this Person judging on his slip of tongue or rather absentmindedness on a basic fact. Shouldnt he be scrutinized n be re-called for mental evalution
