Jinnah Express starts between Karachi and Rawalpindi

One more way to get to rawalpindi/islamabad, as as far as the news reports suggest, a luxurious way at that. Jinnah Express, the latest offering from Pakistan Railways is all set to start between the two cities from January 8th.
From Gulf Times

“All the train’s bogies will be air-conditioned and it will have a dining car and coffee shop,” Railways Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said, claiming that Jinnah Express would be equipped with several facilities and services.

The minister said the dining car system in the railways is being improved after 20 years. He said the fare of the train would be Rs2,000, which is Rs200 less than the fare being charged in AC class between Karachi and Rawalpindi.

“We are also offering a scheme wherein one free ticket will be given on the reservation of five seats,” said Ahmed.

In other railway news, this is the 12th train to be launched from Karachi, while two others are in the pipeline and will be launched on March 23.
From Dawn:

[The minister] disclosed that Rs220 million have been earmarked for construction of three more platforms at the Karachi Cantonment railway station.

He disclosed that the Pakistan Railways was planning to erect ‘protective walls’ from the Karachi Cantonment railway station to the Landhi railway station to save precious lives as around 100 people get crushed under the train every year.

He announced that an alternative railway track would be laid on the Hyderabad-Mirpurkhas track, which would reduce travel time upto 50 minutes. Similarly, another alternative track would be laid on the Kotri-Malir (Karachi) track, which would reduce travel time upto 45 minutes.

An interesting aspect of this news was this statement “He said that concerted efforts were being made to bring travel time between Lahore to Karachi upto 12 hours ‘prior to next polls.'”. Have the polls really started having effect on when stuff gets done? If so, its definitely a first!

This guy Sheikh Rashid is the only one man who really can do anything for people when he wants to. though he is not a clean soul but he does look like a real awaami guy. At times he is pro-mushy (or pro gov. ) & sounds a lota but again he is better than others when it comes to doing some real work if he has the will.

@HAZE: yeah it got shot down by its own bullet :D (joking) … i dont think bullet trains can come here cause of the 50 year old tracks laid all over the country … they can even stand trains traveling more than 140Km/h …
