Sindh Festival 2007 – Rising to Greater Heights

sindhfestival.JPGKarachites are in for a treat this year. One after another events and festivals are marking our calendar time and truly giving an outlet to the entertainment deprived masses of the city. The Sindh Festival of the sea starts up today at Clifton beach, just as the Humara Karachi festival winds down.

A large area around the Beach Park has been reserved for the festival and the main theme of this year’s festival is “Rising to greater heights“, followed by three sub-themes including ‘human trafficking,‘ ‘women empowerment‘ and ‘preferring national interest over self-interest‘.

The first day events include a grand festival parade, a fireworks display by the Karachi Port Trust, a laser show and Sufi music show.

Other events of the festival which would span the next three days include a cultural village, sports village, fishermen’s village, health village, naval village, army and Rangers village and a business village. The festival would also have a kid’s area with many interesting activities, such as a debate competition and public speaking competition. Bodybuilding, beach volleyball, boxing, vintage car display, scale model display, VJ contest, cinema, arts and crafts, scuba diving are also part of the festival.

The “Whirling Dervishes” troupe from Turkey is in town and performed at the KMC building on Tuesday.

Wonder if they’ll be part of the “sufi music show” at the Sindh Festival. It’ll surely be good if they are there.

If anyone is in the Clifton area … or going to the area for lunch, please find out if any timings for the activities are finalized.

Directions: the festival is at the new park overlooking the fountain by the sea. Go from Bilawal side as other accesses are closed (as far as I know).
