GEO, Gumnaam : Shocking 3rd episode

Update: 3rd Episode video

Not many including me notice a few lines story in any Urdu daily’s backside page. But when a credible friend emailed me this piece I knew he must have done his homework before asking me for a post. Then it started. I saw the first episode & had to agree the man put his life in great danger trying to show us our society’s ugly face which we don’t want to see, discuss trying to be ostriches & satisfy ourselves with things like traffic, cricket & movies & parties. Personally, this guy looked to be a run away insider who had either decided to cancel the evil path or had entered into the black list of his own higher ups so he decided he is taking along everyone if he is going down. GOD knows.

I missed the 2nd one but the third one yesterday was a real shock. A fake peer fakeer raping innocent women (by deception or by force its simple rape if anyone thought it was sex considering the mental capacities of resistance of those innocent women) thanks to families, those believed in him, destroying their lives forever. There was definitely a lot of sound & video cut required yet it was clear on what’s going on. It’s ironic that women have to go to these fake fakeers as a hope to avoid our social & cultural evils. Later they end up destroying everything. The woman in first video was alone. Her family was bent upon having a second marriage for her husband if she couldn’t have a child.

The fake fakeer traped her & plays with her weak belief & she ends up being raped . Where this woman will go now. Who will listen to her faryaad. She paid the price for everyone’s ignorance. In second video a women brings her own daughter to the fakeer asking him to remove the Jinn from her. The girl apparently looked normal & kept refusing to her mother and the fakeer but being the jahil our majority women (& men) are there was no hope for her. The mother left her with fakeer. He tied her with ropes & the rest is a case of shame & humiliation, destroying the innocents life. He, in the end threatens her if she tries to tell this to anyone & tells her he has 6 or 7 men who can do the same with her.

Its so painful to look to the reality that is around us that is just coming up now on TV. Around you & around me. Go to any slum or nearby slum locality in Karachi & you will see the same reality lying hidden yet so clear. In a country where people declare a women to be raped, this was just the tip of the iceberg the man tried to show. I fought hard here to prove we are not a sex starved country, but Its hight time we wake up before being labeled a society that constitutes a good percentage of rapist. Rapes do occur all around the world specially WEST but the women have the awareness & power to fight there & support of judicial system. Any such hope here is 100 years away, apparently thats why we have these cases. And its because of these incidents that few stupid westerns think we belong to stone age. Non availability of justice & not merely that the women are treated as such.

Lets see how long its going to take before the uuper walas, as per their tradition ask GEO to ban the program on religious & cultural pretext, both being the easiest of sacrificial goats on our pure land. But well done GEO. Many have raised suspicion in earlier posts calling it a media stunt but I say even its true, its given away path for others to follow if they really want to do justice to their profession.

26 Jan 2007: Tonight’s episode of Gumnaam which I just watched on GEO was really very upsetting and heart breaking. It showed two videos: A pir raping a girl and a police wala beating a man inside a thana.

What is mind boggling is these heartless people are making the videos of these inhuman acts being performed but they are just not doing anything to stop these brutalities and to catch the culprits. So many police officers, fauji afsars, judges and other sarkaris are watching Gumnaam on Geo…these are the people who claim that they are the heroes who are running this country….even they turn a blind eye.

And I am sure there is no one sending these videos to Geo…Geo guys themselves are recording this stuff at the actual locations.

And hey there were three video’s. Two about the fake fakeer.
The third one was not by gumnaam but another person sending a short video shot in a police thana.

sadly enough. our papers continue to report this stuff but really.. who will take action?

MB: Geo sat on the tapes for months while they figured out what to do with them. My guess is that they’ve already covered their asses – something I confirmed with the host of the program.

That is some f*cked up shit.

Rape should be met with one single punishment: CASTRATION.

I was part of this program when I was at geo. They were supposed to do hidden camera stuff, but it never took off since I was there.

It has finally seen the light of the day. but I won’t be surprised if it was a hoax. Though I have not seen it, so I won’t know for sure.

For all who believe there really is a “gumnaam”, get a life guys :LOL

I have seen 1st and 3rd episode of the show and it doesn’t seem to be a one-man candid-camera stuff. For instance, how on earth he recorded the aamil incident? by hanging with the ceiling?

IMHO it’s all fake geo publicity stuff, trying to be human rights and morals champion.

… more revalations via Dawn, this time:

Sultan Masjid (DHA 5) Mullah exposed as an extortionist

Question is will someone have the conscience to tell the ‘pious’ preacher (who sermonizes to the whole world come Friday) about his unholy behavior … or will we just “turn the other way” ?

  15. d0ct0r (unregistered) on January 28th, 2007 @ 1:25 am

initially it seems that this program is created by geo’s own people but they want general public to send them such videos, as more and more people now a days have vdo camera enabled mobile so they want public to act as spy reporter…

another interesting thing is that Dr Shahid Masood director news and current affairs ARYOneWorld joined Geo and left ARY , am not sure about his designation earlier Geo’s MD Azhar Abbas joined DawnTV as director news and current affairs

Gumnam is not less pathetic than any other so called Reality Show. I watched the first episode and got bored after hearing so much “TOON TOON”[censoring punjabi galian by that doctor]. There was nothing exciting in that episode. I didn’t watch the other two but the way MB explained the 3rd episode shows that they are spicing up things which have been discussed so many times.

Lets be honest that Gumnam!= Thelka. Geo can’t be thelka anyway because Jang group haas always act like an obedient servent of all ruling govts of past and present. i could consider Jang group credible if they would have shown stories about current politicians and feudals. They can’t go beyond their limits and they would keep making pathetic promotion by telecasting lame programs like Gumnam which is not less pathetic and engineered than Jerry springer show.

I was shocked to read few days back that Dr.Shahid Masood left ARY network and has joined GEO. It means the end of “real” shahid masood :/

  18. d0ct0r (unregistered) on January 28th, 2007 @ 12:27 pm

well my personal opinion is that ARY was far more restrictive environment for Dr Shahid Masood… he couldn’t openly say alot of things coz the bosses of ARY group didn’t wanted to be tagged as anti govt channel, obviously they had their own resons for that which included their businesses in pakistan and to safeguard those they never really let Dr Shahid speak freely..and the way they’re running ARY network is simply just a money minting venture and for their own self promotion in media..

on the contrary Geo has far more professional environment and it’ll be a nice change for him…

  19. d0ct0r (unregistered) on January 28th, 2007 @ 12:32 pm

their business interests in karachi forced them to make truce with MQM and now MQM prefers ARY news to release any news relating to MQM

  20. Adnan Siddiqi (unregistered) on January 28th, 2007 @ 1:17 pm

Doctor, you must be kidding right? Offcourse ARY was not 100% free media but comparitively more open than GEO. You couldn’t imagine interview of Wazristan ex leader on GEO which was later attacked in an air strike by Pakistan Army. People like Hamid Gul and Irfan Siddiqi can’t say things openly as they used to say on ARY.

Watching programs by Kamran khan and Hamid Mir proves my point that they are not open either on that TV channel. Shahid Masood is anti Musharraf and Pro-Taliban person and it’s not a hidden secret. Let’s see how Shahid maintains his profile on new channel. I would prefer to see Dr.Shahid to be part of Express Paper by Lakson group than GEO network because Express Paper which has “bought” many good names of Jang Group and ARY could produce something new in their upcoming TV channel.

  21. MB (unregistered) on January 28th, 2007 @ 3:38 pm

I agree with Adnan, There is no doubt GEO (ARY & others also) has limits. It cannot act like Independent free media channel which people can always look upon for truth. For normal news its best. For in-depth Analysis it badly needs to get out of Jee hazuur wala attitude for ARMY, and GOV & also MQM, feudal & BIG GUNS.

Frankly none can match BBC or CNN. CNN and BBC only become biased when touching ISLAM. Else they do a great job or try to do at least with room for improvement.

As for the program. Well it’s just a small step forward, assuming it doesn’t turn out to be a hoax. Others should capitalize on this idea.

  22. Ramla A. (unregistered) on January 28th, 2007 @ 5:30 pm

No newspaper is an island; they exist within their limits and in a certain place. The reality of a paper’s situation cannot be denied. As once part of the Geo TV team, I have seen days of attacks and barricades of the office I. I. Chundrigar plus the many threats… most of which are not communicated to all the people to prevent panic. This is real stuff, and there is a limit to endurance. One has to strategize.

Forget pressure from the top; there is pressure at every level… included being tagged by job-hopefuls. I dealt with the likes of “brother of Moeen Akhtar” and other gate-crashers when handling a hiring campaign. The Director of an agency once sent in a stuttering man to audition as an anchor; and as a novice media person, I got by only because I was naive enough to tell the director sahib off (on phone)! (But endured quietly the filming of the stuttering auditions. Plus many others which would make American Idol look tame.)

You can’t just say, “I am not going to do it.” Those who prescribe that are recommended to take their own dose AND show success? Sometimes you have to be like the river stream that passes quietly through the rocks with the singular aim of reaching the river one day.

As for Geo – while I don’t agree with their entire range of programming and I am personally not in agreement with the strategic direction of Pakistani media (meandering like every other thing Pakistani) – Geo has been self-regulating to a great degree. We have invented regulations where none existed, and constituted internal policies.

The up-side is the (technical) quality of programming and the many positive developments, particularly on the news side under the brilliant administration of Azhar Abbas and the ideas of the CEO. The down-side is that since the “government” (PEMRA, to be exact) does not have forward thinking regulations in place, private media has an open-playing field. This is often used to monopolistic advantage – but despite all business competitiveness, all media organizations have largely supported each other. And expanded “the pie” in the process.

There is no role model for most media organizations; the entire process is of trial-and-error based on feedback and readings of a thoroughly confused society (which would like Indian soaps, but not on Pakistani TV). However, the media sector is learning fast; Geo, e.g., admitted in a producers’ conference that the Pak audience have not received the Indianised soaps well. There is need for both leadership and direction in the media sector; mostly, we are still dominated by minds awed by the West or India. Hard to blame them, though, because we have no local education! You develop the mind that your education gives you.

Media science is not understood even by the people within media. Hopefully the new programs at SZABIST and CBM would bring some knowledge of how media works to our society.

After spending a good deal of years understanding the very nature of conflict, bias, and the use of language, I have reached the conclusion that no one is so unbiased.

CNN and BBC look unbiased, but they start with the simple premise that the Western thought/policy is not just right, it applies globally. So the question they ask is not whether one should insult religious figures, but how can one deal with the reaction? Not whether the capitalistic model is OK for all nations, but rather, why certain nations are not receiving FDI (foreign direct investment) well? Not whether there is justification in the anger of war-struck, but how to “deal with them.”

In the recent years, leading linguists such as Noam Chomsky have revealed the inherent bias of language and logic present in the Western rhetoric/ media. A good point to start to understand this is to read up on “fallacies of logic.”

I despise to generalize and must say that I have indeed respect for the very-contemporary Western thought in which I see the last hope for the world. By the gross generalization “Western,” I mean the still-colonial thought. Excuse my want for the correct term.

The young human in all parts of the world, thankfully, is no longer accepting the old inhumane ideals – but our “thinkers,” academics, and political leaders are. 30 more years to go…

With respect all this “hala baloo” about nothing! This TV show has you all wrapped up in its folds. Like children you yearn for the shown to start. And after makes fine coke talk.

Stop kidding yourselves please, you and I both know what happens in this country. And much worse than Geo will ever be able to record or telecast.

Do we really need a TV program to inform us of the types of corruption and sins we engage in daily?

Oh no, I forgot. We are Muslims and this is Pak-istan. These things do not happen here.

Give me a break and grow up please.

i think we may be missing the point here. There are numerous naive mothers who take their children to these pirs fakirs thinking that these men are in some way divine and will treat their sons/daughters with the utmost respect.
Its vital for those people to know that you can call yourself a pir or a priest or a pundit but that does nothing to stop you from also being a molester/rapist.
If even one person saw some sense after the program its all worth it.

Ash you are right of course. You correctly point out that many parents (people) are ignorant, as most of us are too I might add, about these fake pirs/fakirs etc.

However the real point being missed out here is that, the people who read and post on these forums are not the ones who will walk away, enlightened in any form, from here.

This is about the right message in the wrong place.

    CNN and BBC look unbiased

I am surprised that you are saying this while a regular visitor/reader of these sources can clearly understand their baisness towards certain community. Offcourse they don’t use lunatic language like FOX but they do try their best to create differences on certain matters like mentioning things like ‘minority shias’ or ‘majority muslims’ while reporting about Iraq.

Rolling my sleeves rubbing my hands …
    Here are views…
About GEO about ARY about KAMRAN KHAN about SHAHID MASOOD…& about GUMNAAM off course…

    Starting with GUMNAAM & GEO…

I dont know y this person selected geo for this purpose because everyone knows that this channel is purely belongs to ISI & without involvement of ISI this is not possible…

than question arise why they are showing such things on media because it is worthless without any action…
Now we know the culprits behind this…

It is clear now that geo can also have some links with the things thay are showing…

i know its a difficult job that is performed with great execution & direction…

What i want RESULTS but is there any RESULT after screening of this program…

    A BIG NO…

    Did our Police Raid ?
    A BIG NO…

Did any one take action after watching this prog?

    A BIG NO…

Now we know the place, we know the people who are involved in those cases, so any one made some plan to catch those criminals?

    A BIG No…

if all my answers are same than what is the MAQSAD of telecasting this SHIT…

purely a government’s journalist who always speaks government language… a top class LOOTA…

    DR.Shahid Masood…

highly knowledgable, alwayz trying to speak truth, daring and show the clear picture…

i think thats enough for the day…
    now keep BOMBARDING…. ;)

I don’t think that it is as such a life-risking investigative journalism. I also don’t think that it disturbs the establishment and the ruling class. The crimes depicted in the Gumnaam, no matter how horrible they are, they were showing crimes comitted by poor and ordinary people of Pakistan. If Gumnaam has such gutts why doesn’t he goes to Afghanistan and proves the ISI’s involvment in Taleban uprising? OR he can tell the nation about the Fouji commissions in the defense deals, OR he can show us the dubious face of some politician who is currently serving the government. To me that would be life risking highly praisable investigative journalism. Even if he does that, there is no chance the GEO would ever allow such videos.

I saw this program around 1am in the afternoon with a shiny PG logo. No warning, nothing. I think the times are not suitable. Most of the time families are watching TV and if someone wants to watch this seriously, he/she can’t.

It is a reality-hoax programme. If you read his letter, it looks like it was written by a creative writer who arouses the excitement in one’s self. The pir fakir video can be a hoax until and unless, the “Gumnaam” turned into a clock+camera.

BTW, Shahid Masood was not a biggie, his research team was good. He only sits and expresses it out. He better stay out of Express Paper’s Channel. Fahd Hussain is much better than him.

And since Einstein was so gifted, why didn’t he study biology?
Why do we do what we do and not something else?
Why aren’t men, women; and women, men; or it that perhaps the case?

    Quite a philosophical project, eh?!

  35. MB (unregistered) on February 1st, 2007 @ 5:59 pm

Einstein never said he is interested in it so he was not supposed to. GEO, the image they portray are “suppose” to uphold truth at every level. Why it is confined to one section.

If GEO doesn’t try to stand out as the champion who reaches everywhere sab se pehlay (their own wording) no one would object.

You wont say anything to someone who doesn’t know. GEO knows & it hides it. Thats the whole point. It shows what suits the gov. not what it should.

  36. Sam Bravo (unregistered) on February 2nd, 2007 @ 4:35 pm

journalism is not the KEY here …

As you watched the 3rd episode lots of question arise in my mind …i.e if the baba so called (PIR SAHAB) had sex with the LADY how this MR.GUMNAAN arrived there to record or if he placed a camera some where how come he again got the tape…

If any of ever went to any Asthana of any pir it is not possible that anyone can do such that MR.GUMNAAM did it…so the result is …

Geo is itself involved in this show some how …& that is a bitter truth…

  37. Ramla A. (unregistered) on February 2nd, 2007 @ 5:22 pm

Exactly. I am worried too; the Allied forces aren’t yet bombing Karachi. Yet.

If only Pakistani media would claim that Pakistan is involved in Afghanistan can we reach the cave sooner; dead or alive.

So far, only Karzai blaming his ineffective upon us means some attacks on the border on poor suspects who didn’t stand a chance. Not entirely satisfactory. Retaliatory suicide attacks by their grieved fellow – also not satisfactory.

P.S. desperate darlings, don’t worry, the planes will come. Meanwhile, enjoy the definition:

Media is… media i.e. bridge between two things. In the MIDDLE. Here, between the audience and the NEWS-MAKERS. Now news-REPORTING is not the same as news-MAKING. If news-MAKERS are making bad news (like the one that will bring the daisy cutters), what choice does a reporter have?

Imagine a report suggesting that Pakistan is involved in regional trouble-making [we all know and DON’T know the truth; as Pakistanis, we are run on hearsay, no more]. Imagine what will happen next; aren’t we reading the papers? Then I wonder who will NOT be saying that Einstein should have stuck to Physics?

    Ramla :
You are talking is “right point” but not “the point” that we pointed out. Talking left and right off the point & talking about it on its center is different.

Our point is simple, very simple that you don’t need to get Einstein’s physics for that.

Why the heck GEO’s responsibilities start & end only to particular topics and sections of society. And we are not asking them to start digging into AQ khan network or anything. I guess the rest is repetition.
What they did to investigate the Bugti killing. What they are doing to check check huge percentage going to ALTAAF bhai. What are they doing about the Wadera’s & Choudhry’s personal jail’s that exist all over Punjab & Sindh & obviously the corruption in forces etc. Why they didn’t follow the Admiral Mansoor case.

Exactly. Why why we why why, why not whatever else.

P.S. I am neither a fan of Indian soaps nor of overtly masculine-minded negative programming or press on any channel or paper. But this is about the pointed point that was pointedly pointed out.

  41. Ramla A. (unregistered) on February 3rd, 2007 @ 9:52 pm

There are shows called Capital Talk and Jawabdeh, among others, which cover stuff of the global and regional nature.

But they are news REPORTERS and ANALYSTS, not news MAKERS. (Once again.)

BTW, this is how reporting works: you take a paper & pen or recording equipment and stuff, and go tap a source. Acha hota yoon hai ke agar source kuch na bolay, then you don’t have any news. End of story.

If you sit in a studio and speculate what really happened, it’s called “yellow journalism.”

I actually think that what we are witnessing on this post/ blog/ elsewhere is a Dialog. It must continue. It is good for the larger Pakistani media sector to get realistic feedback. And it is good for the organization(s) it is aimed at. Whether those be media orgs such as DT and Geo, etc. or other corporations that are given feedback via blogs and comments.

But I also think that as people, we empower ourself when we have knowledge of ground realities, not just free advice worth as much as its paid for. A good point to start would be to google and learn how media really works. If we have that knowledge, we can blow more than empty air at our corporations.

P.S. We only have Pakistani media to build. Live with it. BBC and CNN and Fox will not be our voice. Ever.

  42. Ramla A. (unregistered) on February 3rd, 2007 @ 10:07 pm

    @ MB:

I only mean to provoke thinking, not individuals.

After all is said and done, the intentions of us all are good… and we are engaged in this conversation in good faith.

I walked away from the media sector a couple of years ago, and tried to get engaged with do-goodie organizations. I found them too unrealistic in their approach. Personally, I have decided to go back, and exert positive influence. We can’t create anything by bringing it down. I will say again and again on this forum: WE HAVE TO OWN UP TO OURSELVES AND OUR INSTITUTIONS. We can’t simply walk away and try to build an alternative reality.

It won’t happen. Young men who are trying that are ending up in the wrong hands. Disappointed, blown up in bits.

Our institutions are our reality; they are too young to be attacked with cynicism. There is no big solution to “this problem” except that the youth of Pakistan take personal responsibility for their own actions and take charge of our own minds. When we do the right thing ourselves, we have the capability to influence others.

Words don’t cut it. Lofty thoughts are for books; actions are for people.

Hey… the issues until now (corruption, beggary, deceitful sex) all are independent of Islam or any other religion. Its simply the matter of a corrupt to core society.

And no we the authors are not an elite society. We are from you. And no its not our duty to jump in and say we gonna provide the solution. Everyone has to do his/her job dear. We are doing what we are best suppose to do with many lacking but still trying out best.

Having said that there are different issues in society that need to be taken up by different people. Crimes being one issue.
