Street Crime & Side Mirrors

326281703_b4fc7151a6_m.jpgLiving in Karachi one knows the menace of street crime in terms of auto parts, they snipe off an item from your beloved car, you curse under your breath and head over to the auto mechanic for a replacement, one often wonders if he/she is being served up with the very same part that was sniped only days earlier.

This clever chap has devised a brilliant theft lock for protecting his side mirrors which may have a higher rate of disappearance

Gosh this certainly is a problem in Karachi. On my last visit to Karachi, Dec06/Jan07 – I really got the vibe its a big deal there… I hear car insurance is pretty expensive there – which is obviously because of the crime rate :(

Farhan, it was only near the PAF Museum. Some hot shot is coming or going there to attend some sort of a function. Also saw a number of buses filled with women going there too.

Otherwise the whole SF was devoid of police or rangers.

Kickass idea! At first glance, though, the camera (reflection in the mirror) looked more like a pistol, and I was, like, WOAH!!! :O Funky picture, nonetheless!

Till 2005 you could have your ripped off rear view mirrors replaced (by someones elses ripped off mirrors, or maybe your own) at the Plaza car acc market for Rs. 1200 a set for almost any car.

Now the going rate is Rs. 600 per set, thanks to easy a huge supply from druggies who are eager to make quick bucks all over the city.

Just go to plazes and ask for the rear view mirros of any car, and the baloch bhai (no offence) will walk into any lane and rip off another car, and come back after 10 minutes with a set for you.

A word of advice, done leave your car alone, or you might be someone elses bakra !

by the grace of Allah all mighty i have never been robbed of a mobile phone yet… but twice my car’s side mirrors were stolen while being parked… and i got them replaced from plaza at the rates mentioned by @Kashif-x while on the third attempt my driver managed to nab the charsi and beat the crap out of him… he had hidden the mirrors inside front bumper
and was reluctant to accept that he was stealing them… and when beaten he just bent beneath the car and handed over the mirrors…

@ A For Pineapple – I agree even on closer look it does appear to be a pistol but sadly its a camera. It would have been brilliant to see this Chor-lock on the mirror while the dude in the car was being mugged.

i have seen a person being mugged at civic center traffic signal .. when light turned red out of nowhere two well built guys came charging towards the new corolla in front of mine and one of them had his head inside the car from driver’s side like pretending to be conversing with the driver while other was on guard and within 15 seconds they were gone… (one of them looked like a police man) … and the poor fellow(his wife and child were also in car) who obviously must have been shocked slowly drove off when the cars behind him started honking (others simply had no clue what had happened)

p.s. keep your windows(especially driver’s side) closed while stopping at signals and don’t display your cellphone on traffic signals.. and if god forbid you’re being mugged … don’t resist or panic.. coz it could be fatal..

Sorry to kill the excitement guys, but its a sony k-800i camera which is in black color, and not a pistol
