Court marriages in karachi

There are things you always hear about and take it on the authority of whoever is telling you, or that you want to believe it. Then there are times when you hear numbers!

Court marriage is one such issue. To date, i have not heard of any incident involving a court marriage, divorce yes.. but marriages no. So i took it for granted that maybe they do not play much of a part in our society. What with nikkah registrars and everything. Then i read this news…. and burst out laughing!

Upto 800 court marriages are happening in karachi almost everyday, a survey carried out of the courts and surrounding law firms revealed. However, this is not what i was laughing about. It was this…

“The parties come in with all the required documentation and witnesses. In a majority of the cases, they sign the contract and go back to their respective homes instead of actually running away from home and living together.”

Funny what drives people do to such things… other facts from the article after the jump

  • Court marriages are mostly an option for schoolgirls and young boys suffering from family pressure.
  • “They take this way out for three reasons: a couple can’t convince the parents they are sincere about getting married, a man wants to marry for a second time and a third reason is financial problems.” Advocate Babar
  • There is also the possibility that either party is marrying for money, or they also opt for court marriages if social norms do not agree with the situation that the young people find themselves in.
  • General consensus among the lawyers is that at least 75 per cent of these marriages get annulled later, since most of them are not consummated.
  • Court marriages are mostly an option for upper- and lower-middle classes people
  • Another common form of court marriage takes place when a man married without the knowledge or permission of his existing wife
  • People generally elope in order to escape from the custom of arranged marriages

DT’s story came first, dude. Our version was printed on March 6, 2007. The reporter who filed the piece (Uroos Ahmed) is a friend of mine.

Plus, she filed it, and I edited it — the story that the Qatar newspaper picked up (STOLE!!! :@) is the final edited version that we (DT) printed on March 6. Ima kick the Qatar paper’s ass. STUPIDAS!

    Uroos says:

Kuttay, kameenay, h**********y. I should sue (sew?!) their a$$e$!! They don’t know what it’s like to go to court and to do all this hardwork with jacka$$e$ staring at your a$$ the whole day. And fall in the court while trying to be an honest journalist and break your leg and back. And then see some a$$hole stealing your hardwork. I wannna sue them.

P.S.: Uroos is a lawyer herself!

Can the admins remove BT’s posts? It’s disgraceful to talk about anyone else like that, and pollutes the whole atmosphere.

@ZS – If one was to stop at the sound of barking each time one moved in this city one would get no where, right!

That this person cannot make any coherent sentences says a lot about his literacy. That this person is abusive and obnoxious tells me that he is used to this language at home. This reflects on his up-bringing or lack of it.

Let him enjoy, after all this is probably the only place he gets to be heard and the only way he can get excited…

I still can’t get over the figure 800 “court marriages” daily!!!

  21. Jamal Shamsi (unregistered) on March 12th, 2007 @ 3:51 pm

can’t gulp down figure of 800 marriages a day ? That too at COURTS – I have certain doubts for the figure, else the reasons for that.

By the way – :) seems like a new / blog / become quiet personalised ONE on ONE when we cannot tolerate and ignore other people’s opinion.

1.This is certainly a strange statistic.
2.Bt and tes whatever you are complaining about if you have a genuine point then make it without all the k bombs. Bozz, anon etc havent abused you, so whats your problem? “they think they are smart?” well the way you are acting they are a million times smarter than you.
