GEO ARY & AAJ TV – blackout in Karachi

Related post by TMGEO the drama queen

The “dunda” comes in many forms & shapes. It may come in a form of belt or a PEMRA notice or an attack on TV station or disappearing journalists.

Ironically this coincides with World Press freedom day on May 3. Is this a gift to media though the GEO attack wasn’t a bad one either.?

Its 7:00pm local time now in Karachi & for the last two hours 3 particular channels GEO AAJ & ARY are out on cable in Karachi. These channels were about to show the CJP address to Lahore bar LIVE. Because people can’t be stopped watching it so is dunda used to force the cable operators to take if off air. The cable guy doesn’t know & is simply putting everything on PEMRA.

I called AAJ TV to confirm this & also called friends in different areas in Karachi to confirm (including Teeth Maestro) that these 3 are out over cable. Don’t know if this covers 100% Karachi. The cable operator has no reason & he has no clue why its happening but we do.

The question is, does using such tactics in 21st century not make it a laughing stock in the eyes of the world? Surely all will be normal once the CJP address will end but if anyone of you can still watch the channels let us know. I called few areas so don’t know if this covers 100% Karachi.

Another side to this story is : Are these channels trying to manipulate or dictate the terms or playing a game to keep the anti-gov emotions high & the issue alive so as to make sure the power stays with them. Is this anything to do with the launching of DAWN TV. Is this all to attain public sympathy?. The last para will only unfold with time & for that we shall have to wait a little.

I noticed the same thing. Actually all of GEO and ARY Channels (the music, aag, geo super, etc) and AAJ TV are blocked. Don’t know when the government will keep its promise of free press.

    Hello,
I’m in London right now and am watching Geo and ARY Oneworld here. According to Geo the transmission of Geo News, ARY and Aaj have been blocked throughout Sindh!! Geo and Aryoneworld are both showing the CJP’s rally live at the moment (3:24 GMT). We dont get Aaj here so i dont know what they are transmitting at the moment.

GEO and AAJ blocked but some sources in ARY say they are not affected but it could be at the cablewala end.

This is like a stab through the heart of any hint of free press – let the bloggers stand up and report the truth. Well done – MB

with the elctions and what-not coming up…you can’t trust the govt.

PS could it be a DAWN TV ploy to get back in the game – I hear that with the license in their pockets DAWN is gearing for launch and is available right now by satellite decoder subscription.

Just to throw a spanner in the discussion LOL

all three channels are off on my side. the Geo website has something interesting though, they say according to cable operators the channels are off on MQM’s orders and not the governments. you can read the news here in urdu http://geo.tv/geonews/urdu_details.asp?id=9241. i didnt see this news in their english section though, i wonder why.

    hahahaha..

What government want by banning Geo..they will never get friendlier channel than Geo at least as a news channel..

so MQM has started showing its true color publically. first beating of women member in council and now ban on media…
get ready to listen to yet another funny peer saheb taqreer with hilarious accent tomorrow blaming it on secret hands :D

    @ bittertruth
i think i gave the same link :)

anyway, there’s a slide running on business plus saying that MQM ‘strongly’ condemns the ‘ilzamaat’ leveled on it and that it believes in ‘azaadi-e-sahafat’!!

    @TM
I am adding your post in this main post.

Also as for the MQM angle. MQM has accused channels of not showing its rally near press club.

  22. Ovais (unregistered) on May 6th, 2007 @ 12:04 am

“Another side to this story is …”

man, how can these ‘free to air’ channels turn themselves off in Karachi (and I also heard in Lahore, Islamabad) and not in Peshawar, UAE, and UK.

  23. d0ct0r (unregistered) on May 6th, 2007 @ 12:43 am

i get my cable from 2 different cable operators and both of them are saying the same thing that thugs from local MQM’s sector/unit offices have threatened them to close these channels or face the consequences … earlier Ajj was also blocked but now its back on.. while geo and Ary are still down…

  24. d0ct0r (unregistered) on May 6th, 2007 @ 12:48 am

seems like government’s diversion tactic to divert public attention from CJ’s rally to their own rallies(Mush’s rally in thar, Pervaiz ellahi’s rally in lahore,MQM’s rally outside press club..) it seems all these rallies but govt didn’t work out well so MQM’s goons resorted to this tactic of using force and threats..

  25. d0ct0r (unregistered) on May 6th, 2007 @ 12:50 am

MQM just has a habit of using force and threat tactics and then later on condemning it and starting acting like angels and saints..

  26. d0ct0r (unregistered) on May 6th, 2007 @ 1:06 am

Pamera is openly saying that we haven’t ordered any closure and reports are that a party in sindh’s ruling coalition is responsible for the closure..

on the other hand MQM’s spokesman Azizabadi says that since morning all channels were covering CJ’s rally from islamabad to lahore while they didn’t covered MQM’s legal aid meeting outside karachi press club…(so in other word he is saying that coz media didn’t covered our meeting and it was over shadowed by CJ’s rally so they have a right to threaten and close channels? )

  27. Teeth Maestro (unregistered) on May 6th, 2007 @ 2:53 am

GEO has resumed its service – Kamran Khan is covering CJP rally

MQM Thugs. I live in lahore and i was getting to like MQM because of their roots in poor and middle class people of Pakistan. But i think they have damaged their position on this ocassion. watch tommorrow Altaf hussain Malangi Speech. He is funny man. Free the press and let the ordinary people from karachi to islamabad watch Geo, AJJ. Long live Pakistan.

Brilliant UZI…im gonna steal that! :P.

Umm, Azlan shah ka kya hua? Did Pak beat Malaysia? (India lost 1-0 to Aus).

My area (Ph 5) has had elec max of 14 hrs in the past 2 days. Freaking ridic :@.

Anyways, my sis was complaining regarding this thing in the morning. (there was no elec during Mushy’s speech & all coverage of cj kept getting “scrambeled”).

Its funny how “the usual suspects” havnt jumped in yet to defend MQM & how it has no influence on Geo :).

Btw, Mushy says “You can see how much progress Pakistan is making by the lack of electricity” :|. Earth to General….HUH!?

  31. BitterTruth (unregistered) on May 6th, 2007 @ 4:51 am

Mushy thinks the electricity is not needed now after his enlightenment theory.
MQM defenders wont come up because some acts can not be defended by rationale. I hope that the usual defenders will also condemn these acts of threats and if they still have their conscience alive.

Musharraf is paving his way into dictatorship. The guy has no respect for the law, press, freedom of speech or even thought.
