Victims of Spam??

We all receive spam email all to often, but of late, a few companies have started sending spam SMS messages to people. One of them being a company called Flare magazine.

I called up the magazine, and here is the discussion that took place:
me: Why am I receiving sms messages from your magazine?
him: Do you wish to unsubscribe?
me: when did i subscribe?
him: No sir, actually we are sending this out to all Telenor and Warid consumers….
me: I dont use a telenor or a warid line, and incase you are doing so, your actions are illegal.
him: can I have your name and number please so that I can remove you from the list…

I gave him my name and number, made it clear that this was illegal for the company to send unsolicited messages to people.

I have already made a complaint to the PTA, and you are also requested to do so if and when anyone sends you a spam message that you did not subscribe to.

Sending spam messages, either via email or via cell phone is a criminal offence, and while email goes globally and can be blocked using spam filters, SMS is more localized and cannot be stopped, unless the abusers of this technology are punished.

The PTA website, sadly, does not have its complaint form tailored to this, hence please send an email to complaint[at]

Please note: Please replace the [at] with @ when you send your message. This was done to avoid bots from picking up email addresses from sites to send spam.

yes, its been around a week and a half that i and several other people have been receiving spam messages from flare magazine. do note that as per experience, flare management has been quite notorious, and have also been involved in defamation thru their magazine of any company which previously advertised but later withdrew ads.

they would pick and each every non issue and highlight it extravagantly. i believe they should not only be punished for spam, but also for public defamation of various organisations.

Seems everyone here is a victim.

The second time I got one, i sms’d them back asking not to be bugged again.

Got a reply of “Sorry” & its been about 2 months since I was bugged.

What kinda mag is Flare anyways??

Why are you guys blaming this magazine for sms, you should ask your cell phone carrier, who might have sold your info. to them.

its not the cell phone companies that have sold the customer database, its thru various groups and contact cards that are gathered and used for marketing purposes.

Well I got the SMS messages as well as 6-7 emails spams – but on the email spam I requested to be unsubscribed – the dude emailed back and said he will and I think I am free of the pestering SOB.

I am sure this company has their hands on a massive database and are quite simply using the cheap SMS packages to hack away those messages.

I think something needs to be done any suggestions?

  9. Red_Munk!! (unregistered) on May 22nd, 2007 @ 10:55 pm

Yeah, incoming on pak networks is free.

@ TM: Make the mag publish something against the present Gov Admin.

Poor guys will get threatened into oblivion! :P.

BTW, it is very naive to think that disguising the email address like “complaint[at]” would fool the bots. These bots are intelligent enough to parse these kind of email variations.

Oh come on! I never had a contact card made. These guys are sending messages to everyone.

I have a ufone postpaid connection.

    I work at ufone.

    Get the same message.

It is quite a lame thing to do.

The other day I was at 7th NCR award and this person received the journalism award.

That was very painful thing to watch keeping in mind what I have been receiving from the flare guys in sms.

    Kher, point noted :)
