Atleast someone cares! …CPLC

I had always heard about CPLC( Citizen police liaison committee) but never had any sort of interaction with them
For past few weeks this anonymous call has been disturbing me and last few days it became unbearable, when this guy started calling up every other hour and asking for different names but this stupid guy kept on calling from the same Telenor number.
The guy was so consistent that he kept on calling despite that I never talked to him. After two three days of him calling me, I strated picking up the call and dropping it. (Just to waste his money:-P, I thought doing so will stop his calls, however, in vain)
Friday, I asked my Khaloo to attend the call who scolded him on which the guy said ” Aap ki beti mujhey khud call kerti hay or ab mujh sey baat nahin kar rahi”. After Khallo left, I asked khalla to attend the call on which the guy started talking bull shit.
(Since I work from home, it’s hard for me to switch off/silent my mobile phone)

Now that I was using Warid’s connection and this call was really annoying me, specially after the obscene language he used with my khala, I called up and asked the CSR at warid call center if they could block this number. Since, I was using a postpaid connection with GPRS and heavy bills; I thought they would treat me nicely. But the representative told me kindly to call up telenor since the number that was calling was not theirs. I called up telenor and they gave me a long process of visiting their office somewhere near Awami Markaz with an application and my NIC.
I was getting even more annoyed, while the bloody man ad started calling after every other minute.
Finally, I thought of putting a divert on not attended calls and called up my cousin on whose number I planned to divert my calls. He also told me to call up CPLC and complain it to them. Good people, listened to me and the lady asked me to fax them with my number and name which I did.
By 10:00 AM I received a call from CPLC’s representative and the problem of was half solved, when I realized the guy had started calling me from some other number!
Anyways, nicely tackled by the CPLC guys (he gave me a number on which I had to call as soon as I get the call from the annoying guy) and now, I’m not getting any calls from him! It has only been a day though, yet it seems like a relief from what I have gone through the whole week.
Finally, somewhere, where an ordinary citizen was treated special and the problem was resolved.

    Buhat hi ghatya insaan tha.
The good thing is we dont have unlimited calls package in Khi, otherwise it would be miserable.

I was wondering why that guy didnt call you when you have given your number to CPLC.
**thinking ** Is it possible that the guy who was bugging you was also from CPLC itself ??
I dont know why its so difficult to catch the devil in our society.

What does this guy get out of this? Some people have too much time and too little brain.

i have heard CPLC is quite good in these things…people bugging around on the internet as well…contact cplc if you have any issues..and they try to help through the isp’s…cause legally you won’t be able to get anything out of the isp..

not sure what the cplc would have done to this guy who was calling but it would have been a great idea to actually name and shame him..publicly announce and put it in the papers of what he has done and get him to do some community service (for free) or something like that. at least this will give others an example of what can happen and how severe it can be.

  9. d0ct0r (unregistered) on June 5th, 2007 @ 1:02 am

no concept of community service here..

CPLC is really a blessing for KArachi , we have their Neighborhood Care system and they are always there to help

    @Unaiza:

I personally know somebody in cplc, who used to go out of the way to solve out general ppl problems till he started receiving threats for himself & his family, this poor chap ended up not only leaving the CPLC but also the country for good.

This is what ‘they’ do with ‘humans’ in karachi.

  13. BitterTruth (unregistered) on June 5th, 2007 @ 2:02 am

CPLC website indicates it was a brainchild of former governer Justice(R)Fakhurddin G Ibrahim. Thanks to him we have such institution. There are some other institutes working honestly, it would be nice if bloggers also cover here and in their newspapers such institute/personalities in order to recognize their work. I can think of SUET as another good example.

that’s gr8 Unaiza! Btw cud sumone tell me how to deal with noisy neighbours who r really a pain? :(

    @ Unaiza
Atleast there is someone who got relief from police…! and atleast i have got one example…! otherwise all police and cplc are corrupted…! I remember…when my father lost his wallet including credit card, id’s and some money somewhere on street, then i and my father went to police station for FIR, while my father was empty but i had some money with me, but guy asked for 200Rs as a RISHWAT from my father, i had money, so i start bargaining with that police man in police station and ended up on 50Rs.
So Unaiza….! atleast you loose nothin and got relief free of cost from our corrupted Polics specially in Karachi, where police want to be transfered for good eanring (RISHWAT).
SAY THANKS GOD THOUSAND TIMES IF ANY GOVT EMPLOYEE WORK FOR YOU ON FREE OF COST! specially Polics.

Even though I appreciate the seriousness
of the post and how upset Unaiza may have
been, I have to admit that reading the

I just have to add that the CPLC might just be the only functioning quasi/govermental organization we have. My experiences with them have also been great.

Dont know which mobile you were using. Regarding my nokia N Series Symbian phone, there are small pieces of software, which automatically filter out any unwanted calls and numbers and allow only the whitelist callers. Provided if the annoying call keeps coming from the same number.

  21. Red_Munk!! (unregistered) on June 5th, 2007 @ 10:27 am

    Lucky you.

A few of my friends have had to change their sims multiple times due to this s**t :@.

Empty brains seem to be a Paki’s workshop!.

@ Alterego: All s60 phones (mostly nokia’s) have this ‘Call Baring’ feature. Usually found in Settings.

    —-
Strange to hear the Telenor ppl asking you to go all the way to Awami markaz. Ive got #’s blocked twice from the do talwaar office without any trouble.

Try keeping multiple sims. 1 personal that you only share with ppl you trust. The other “awami”, Mobilink maybe :P.

  22. mansoor (unregistered) on June 5th, 2007 @ 1:49 pm

red_munk: lol @ mobilink as awami chip! haha! but seriously, its a hassle carrying two cell phones around :S

this is the second time i’ve heard CPLC come to the rescue in cellphone harrasment cases.

Also, i’ve had a personal experience with them when my car was stolen and they were quite helpful, ensuring the annoucement was on the wire asap, ensuring even that i was not harrased by the local cops at the station.

they really are a blessing for this city!

Iterestingly, I found this in one of the latest posts by RAMLA A.

    http://karachi.metblogs.com/archives/2007/06/another_one_bit_2.phtml#comments

I changed my cell number last year when Mobilink refused to help in tracing an anonymous caller, who eventually passed my number around. I reported from CPLC to God-Knows-who, who all wasted my time, and it finally came to using “connections” to block the jerk’s number, which he restored the next day. Only those who go through those ordeals know how it feels. I wrote about the CPLC incident but not about their lack of any process to track such fools b/c I saw no point nor did I want the public to lose faith in them – who knows, may be they can help someone, somehow. I don’t like to spread negative news.

is there any case of guys also getting harassed by these buggers? coz i fell left out :P

  25. lost_in_the_maze (unregistered) on June 5th, 2007 @ 5:19 pm

And why is it that most of the crank calls are from Telenor. I have 8 -10 Telenor numbers that keep sending me missed calls. Aarghhh!!!

  26. Faylasuf (unregistered) on June 5th, 2007 @ 6:48 pm

well, we are khud kafeel in farigh hazraat and khawateen

the interesting part is that you would never get an able bugger from same network, if you are using mobilink the person wud b from ufone, if you are using telenore it wud b from warid n vice versa. the first trick they teach you in bugging 101 is to never bugg yr network brother!

i keep two fones and more sims, hv been through this on my ufone, warid and telenore numbers and hav survived, its bout how u handle the situation

u can ward off by being harsh/polite/simple and if nuthin is working then u need sum links to get the bugger blocked.

this is kara city, links work more then the law

Suggestion, if CPLC accepts donations I think all of us should give them whatever we can.

  28. Red_Munk!! (unregistered) on June 5th, 2007 @ 7:50 pm

@d0c: HAHA!. Ill glaadly forward your # to the opposite sexes that go through the trouble of leaving me messages and calls—-even though they never get answered.

The hassle point by mansoor is pretty accurate, but again, its karachi.

Ive seen sim ‘panels’ being sold in Elec market. (a piece of plastic that can host 2-4 sims).

Dunno how well & what phones it works with tough.

We as a nation are messed up….bechare networks/operators ka kya kusoor. (@d0c: HAHA!. Ill glaadly forward your # to the opposite sexes that go through the trouble of leaving me messages and calls—-even though they never get answered.

  35. Baba(r) (unregistered) on June 7th, 2007 @ 11:59 pm

I just want to add in here that me too came across a similar xperience. I’m a ‘mobilink’ user n the crank caller was usin'(of-course!!!) ‘Telenor’. The response of my cellfone operator was exactly the same so i contacted ‘Telenor’ online and reported the matter. To my surprise I was asked to send a scanned copy of CNID card which i did and within a day the problem resolved to an extent (caller started using a different SIM). Well i can say that at least ‘TELENOR’responds….

Well, I am sure we all care but the question is , are we willing to do anything about it.

Although I dont live in Pakistan but I know it is a hude problem there.

I think CPLC is a great organization, I was reading about it and its partially funded by Govt and by donations from the public sector. Good Work guys…..
