Hino Chowrangi Flyover – Engineering Flaw?

hino_flyover_mistake.jpg

Its been discussed among quite a lot of circles that there is a big flaw in the engineering of the hino flyover, specifically in this leg. It appears that the decent is at a very steep angle. This leg of the bridge is the one which connects the traffic coming from Baloch Colony By-pass towards Defence. Any ideas on what can be possible doomsday scenarios here?

    Hi All!

I am Town Planner by Profession.
The current strategy of CDGK will not solve the traffic congestion problems of Karachi. The more you widen the roads, the more it will attract the traffic. The need of the hour is to enhance the Public Transport, such public transport that force people to leave their personal vehicle at home and use Public Transport.

As far as the hino flyover is concerned, it is correct according to engineering point view, cause there are certain standards of visibility that must be followed. The circular bent in Flyover at Nursery Sharah-e-Faisal is also qutie disgusting according to public point of view.

I’m a civil engineering in training. It looks fine to me. Angles can be deceiving. It might not make for the safest exits though, especially for our rash fast drivers, due to the traffic merging.

Bottomline: From an international perspective, its probably fine. With regards to its use in Karachi, we should take into account the level of capability and preparedness to assume risk on part of our drivers and make changes. There, it might fail.

I am the Mazdoor who built this thing. The Nazim-e-Nala allowed me to apply my own creativity to build this marvel. Hence i shoved up some Niswar up my mouth and my hands did the rest… ohhhh blisss

The project is designed by NESPAK which is the one of the great engineering firms of Karachi. Its a pleasure for a fresh graduate to get their first jod there.

About the descent: If it is 6% (6 feet vertical in 100 feet horiz) or less than its OK by AASHTO and AREA specs for visibility. Most vehicles are also designed by including factors acc to these highway design specs (this of course doesn’t inclue our vehicles running w/o any fitness check, consuming more fuel for lesser power output).

NESPAK is not great engineering firm of Karachi. It is nationwide firm!!
