Apna Talent – Umair Mirza

Lately, i’ve started realizing that Karachi produces quite a few talented people who show off their skills in the world stage. The latest case in point is Umair Mirza, a regular reader and commenter at KMB as well an avid photographer who says about himself “Karachi gets lot of negative coverage from the world media. and i through my photgraphs want to change it ! so i m trying to show what karachi is like , certainly it is not a BATTLEFIELD with men on camels and sword in their hands”

Umair Mirza recently participated in the BBC’s S. Asia Mobile Phone Picture Competition, going head to head with hundreds, if not thousands, of entries from across the subcontinent and secured third place.

Congrats Umair, and a big “woo hoo” from the team at Karachi MB for making karachi just a bit bigger on the world map.

    I am not sure how this picture supports the insight that Karachi is not all about suicide bombers, killings or camels….

    This picture depicts that its about poor infrastructure; with no proper drainage system which results in flooding due to rain.

    hmm I am not really sure, how that helps Karachi on the world stage.

    Kamran, you wrote:

    ” … Karachi is not all about suicide bombers, killings … the picture depicts that its about poor infrastructure; with no proper drainage system … not really sure (how) that helps Karachi on the world stage.”

    I think you’re missing the point – and the point here is CHOICE.

    The reason (why) the World thinks Muslims are ridiculous is bcz of the fact that NOBODY (muslim / non-muslim) CHOOSES THEIR RELIGION. Yet muslims continue to judge each other (shia sunni etc) and non-muslims (momin kafir etc) and even turn violent about these differences – when the fight over religious differences is not even an act of choice! No one chooses their religion just as we do not choose our name! Then (how and why) judge another human on something that is NOT his/her CHOICE?!

    The prize winning picture, on the other hand, shows failure of action where choice IS involved. It depicts Karachi as you said, as a city “with no proper drainage system which results in flooding due to rain.” But ISN’T THAT EXACTLY WHAT KARACHI (IS) RIGHT NOW? A mega metropolis with no master plan? Changing poor drainage is very much AN ACT OF CHOICE – which most interestingly, is being ignored by the denizens of Karachi!!

    And therein lies the irony. What we do NOT choose, we fight over it & judge other over it – and what we CAN choose, we choose to ignore. Hence the picture rightly won a prize bcz although it does not portray Karachi in the best light, but it shows our failure to understand the most basic of human trais bestowed upon us by Nature … CHOICE. We humans benefit (only) from what (we ourselves) choose.

    @Imran

    I totally agree with your point, and I am not judging whether the picture should have won or not. What I am trying to saying is that the photographer just contradicted his own statement

    a regular reader and commenter at KMB as well an avid photographer who says about himself “Karachi gets lot of negative coverage from the world media. and i through my photgraphs want to change it ! so i m trying to show what karachi is like , certainly it is not a BATTLEFIELD with men on camels and sword in their hands”

    How is this photograph going to change the negative coverage of Karachi? That is my question

    Congratulation! We all must send pics to BBC more often. Also nice ones. They have “Most striking Images from around the world” section. India comes up almost all the time and Pakistan does not because we are lazy crazy people who only like to watch geo and gossip. So START SENDING IMAGES NOW…
