Karachi 4th Worst Liveable City

Livability.jpg The Economist has published a survey conducted by its Intelligence Unit in December of 2006 where Karachi was sadly ranked as the fourth worse city to live in. Top cities in Australia and Canada are rated the most liveable in the world having a low crime rate, little threat from instability or terrorism and a highly developed transportation and communications infrastructure, The rankings lead with Vancouver (1.3%), Melbourne (1.8%), Vienna (2.3%) & Perth (2.5%)

On the other end of the spectrum out of a total of 132 cities surveyed, the worst-case cities in which most aspects of living quality are severely restricted, reflecting general improvements on a global scale in areas such as education, health care and infrastructure. The worse in ranking are Algiers (64.%), Dhaka (60.4%), Lagos (60.1%) & Karachi (58.6%)

Its definitely a shock to be confronted with a bleak reality that our city was ranked at 128 out of 132 worlds ‘Big Cities’, what worries me even further, is the fact that after the May 12th massacre we may have plummeted even further down the list.

This proves my point that I made earlier that we are one of the most pathetic cities in the world but are still busy baranding us as Burgers Vs Non-burgers, Defense Vs Laloo Khet, and Urdu Medium Vs English. Forget about the government, MQM, Mullahs etc., the average Karahi’ite who makes 98% of the entire population isn’t sane either.

Time for a massive wake up call for those who are still in self-denial. Get real and take initiatives at individual level to make a postive diffenernce in the society. Act now.

@ZEE Yes we would have been on the top 4 to 5 years back. Now we are climbing up. We are rising from the dead.

@STRAIGHT TALKER : Right on money. How so true.

@REALITY : Climbing up in this charts means going worse. And if dont mean this chart then you seriously need some research on Karachi’s stats few years ago and now. Your comparison will help us too.

    @Straight Talker

Very nicely put. Exactly my thoughts over the whole situation. I have seen a couple of other rankings as well where Karachi is always found at the bottom.

Many people living there their whole life are quite ignorant of what life has to offer. Once they go abroad and see the standard of living, they can understand what pathetic state Karachi is in.

It will be interesting to know where Lahore and Islamabad are on the list, just to give it a better perspective.

I’m not sure if I entirely agree with the rankings stated. I’m surprised that Karachi comfortably ‘beat’ a lot of the war torn African cities (be them in Somalia, Congo et al) as well. I’ve lived my fair share overseas too, but I frankly think Karachi isn’t as bad as is indicated (at least relative to a lot of cities worldwide)! Take Tehran for instance (a fellow listee on this list of ‘unpopular’ cities) – I know of a lot of people who’ve visited and have been nothing short of impressed. Take a look at the following picture for example (courtsey Tehran24) of their city:

    You’ll know what I mean.

Teeth agreed with your poast. But what i dont understand is how easy it is to point out the negetaive elements and forget about the good things. As they say ” when you are right no one remembers, when you are wrong no one forgets” Sometime back i suggested this report to be posted in KMB but nobody was bothered. (Correct me if it was posted).

Karachi Top place to do Business in South Asia.

Pakistan rankes 2nd as business friendly after Maldives.

This report deserves a seperate post.

The punjabi and pathan filth is making lives of Karachites a misery.
in JPMC Pujabies(PSA) killed 2 jamiat workers also punjabi and kashmiris and their bodies flown back to their pinds and the rest filthy punjabies and pathans causing poor people of karachi even not to enter in JPMC.
These punjabi and Pathan filth comes to karachi for study and earning their bread and butter but works against the intrest of karachites.\
The soo called relegious and political parties like Jamat e Islami ANP etc contineously harbouring these outsiders and using them against majority Urduspeaks and they invited them giving shelter in karachi because they want to turn the majority of urdu speaks into minority.
Now its time to clean karachi from these morans as soon as posible.

This should be a wake up call and used as a pivot point to do better for next years charts. I saw the documentary but it does not focus on the daily lifestyles. The quality of life for the poor sucks

I agree with Mantissa that such reports are highly biased towards bias. Baghdad is not in the top ten worst cities?

Yet another propaganda against Pakistan. I have been to two cities of UAE, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and to be honest I thought that I couldn’t survive if I don’t get back to my own city. I think Karachi is very much better then many cities. Much cheaper and with more facilities as compared to many popular cities. I love my city and proud to be a Karachite.

While liveability considers factors of recreational and cultural activity, the “big city buzz” can hamper the scores of some cities, although not to the extent that a city will present significant challenges. Global centres such as New York, Tokyo, London, Hong Kong and Paris may find themselves let down precisely because of their size and attractiveness. Traffic congestion and higher crime rates associated with large urban centres have, to some extent, offset the obvious cultural gains of living in such locations. This has also been compounded by fears that large centres like London and New York will remain targets for high-profile terror attacks. Despite this, most major centres do not present any significant challenges to liveability.

@AHSAN What? the questionable role of the student bodies and their mentors is one thing and bracketting and cursing whole communities is another. Karachi is what it is today because the diversity it supports, every house has its filth but its mostly generated by its inhabitants. Sometimes its also dumped requiring extra clean-up efforts, but that doesnt mean that one population group is superior or inferior to others.

As for the city ranking system, it takes into account, security, civic amenities, cultural richness, weather and entertainment avenues as well as crime rate. Its not an exact science but it surely gives something to aspire too. Remember certain very major Megapolis in US and Europe did not made it to the top ten. Folks dont get paranoid its surely not another conspiracy against Pakistan or Islam.

“Yet another propaganda against Pakistan. I have been to two cities of UAE, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and to be honest I thought that I couldn’t survive if I don’t get back to my own city. I love my city and proud to be a Karachitte.”

Dictator your view are biased because you love your city. It was homesickness because of which you were not able to survive. If you lived in Dubai all you life, then you would have not been able to survive in Karachi.

“I agree with Mantissa that such reports are highly biased towards bias. Baghdad is not in the top ten worst cities?”

The cities that have an ongoing war have not been taken into consideration in this list, as surely they their livability index is far worse. The list only takes in account the cities which are not in the war zone.

“Folks don’t get paranoid its surely not another conspiracy against Pakistan or Islam.”

thats true, our first reaction would be defensive because we all love our city.

If you want to see a better perspective then just click on any cities metroblog and view the news blogs that they have. Their news postings reflect what problems they face, and if we compare the two, you will find that its hardly an issue.

    Hey Dude !!
you are only 20 that is the reason you are talking rubbish .
You remember 12th May go and ask your parents what had happen on 15 dec 1986 when 400 Mohajirs were messacered in one Night by pathans and the reason ??
OPeration clean up on Sohrab Goth by Ghous Ali Shah a non Mohajir non MQM Governer of sindh and in retaliation massacre of Mohajirs.
You said MQM snatched your phone but the biggest stolen phone market is in Banaras a Non MQM area.
you lived in Aziz a abad but sorry to that area was not soo much affected in Army operation.
Dude go ask your parents why there was a messacre of urdu speaks in 1965 ??
what had happen in 1973 when sindhi language bill was moved .
What happen in 1988 in hyderabad and in Pacca Qilla.

You are just 20 you don’t even read a single word of your history and you don’t even know that Muslim league faced humilating defeat from Punjab the so called patriotic punjabies gave vote to Unionist Party instead of Muslim league and Sarder Sikerdar Hyat Tiwana leader of unionist Party salutes the Union jack.
    Grow up man.
If Karachi is Mini Pakistan then how come Only MQM is responsible for every thing ?
Problem of karachi is due to mass migration from up country and the illiterate punjabies and pathans who are making this city a living hell .
Send them back to Punjab and NWFP and Karachi will be a Heaven

The fact that all you morans are talking about Urduspeaks, Pathan and Punjabi clearly shows the level at which you live, think and operate. No wonder this city is right up crap creek and everyone who lives here, adds to it and therefore deserves it. Till we get out of this nonsense about the ones who came from India being more educated and the Pathans not being so, we will stay like this. So all you complex ridden Karachi-ites live in your garbage and swim in the fetid waters while the rest of the world moves on
