Multi storey car parking

I remember blogging about a multi-storey car parking that was supposed to be built somewhere in Saddar area.

The city’s first parking plaza is to being constructed by the CDGK in Lines Area, Saddar. It is going to be a seven storey building with a capacity for 710 cars and 300 motorcycles.60% of teh work has been completed and another six months might take till the project finishes.
The construction started in May 2006 and was to be completed within eight to twelve months. It has been 16 months now, but, better late than never.

I wonder what sort of feasibility study was done prior to giving a go-ahead for this parking lot. That place has number of schools and colleges in the surroundings and there is a factory of sort adjacent to the lot. Some of the issues this parking lot will cause, are:

    1. Due to the educational institutions there always is a jam on the road. Having a parking lot with 700+ cars in that place with add more salt to the injury.

    2. To park cars one has to come via empress market or from mazar-e-quaid side. Both roads are already jam packed due to encroachments.

    3. If somebody has to go to Zeb-un-nissa Street, Elfy, Bohri Bazzar etc. this is going to be a long walk.

It would be better if parking lot would have been developed near Taj Medical Centre (place where many illegal bus stands are hosted) so that all vehicles coming to saddar and adjacent areas would have been parked there and then people can take shuttles to their destination. This would have helped in reducing traffic mass inside city center.

I think its a good start, one of the issues this will fix is that it will take traffic off the roads. They need to build 100’s of these!

They should not build this — it will be a tragedy when it collapses due to poor workmanship and bad quality materials.

they should make Chundigar road and M A jinnah road (from jamia cloth till tower) totally car free.. some mega parking plazas should be built around these business districts and people should be discouraged from taking their cars into these areas.. heavy parking fee should be charged if any one wants to enter the limit of these areas..

We need several of these … especially on sharah-e-faisal, where service roads are barely pliable and at some places even blocked by parked cars.

charging high parking fee during rush hours in busy business districts might discourgae people bringing their cars to work.. but then again its only possible if we’ve got sane public transport system… ban all those world war II model bedford busses and give those drivers new A/C cng busses on easy installment/lease..
