Utter Waste of Money

touchme.jpg
Almost a year and a half back in March 2006, I made a post ‘Minto Roundabout‘ on the, then newly constructed intersection of Shaheed-e-Millat and Hillpark, this busy intersection was overhauled by the Touchme company and had placed a large model of a toothpaste in the center promoting the Minto Brand (I had a few observations on it then as well).

It has barely been more then a year and the administrators of our city have torn the entire roundabout down and are in the process of over hauling the entire place. Apparently it seems they are working to reduce the size of the roundabout which ‘may’ solve the problem but could this not have been envisioned a few years back when other intersections on year back when other such intersection were being overhauled on the same artery, but some how this roundabout was left to be developed as is and soon landscaped by the allocated sponsors. When critiquing this development one may argue that the tenure with the Touchme company may have expired, and the new owners allowed to overhaul the roundabout as per their marketing requirements, or even a few the conspiracy theorist may argue this to be just the same old ‘drama’ which the CDGK has been upto since a few years, the commision earned from the construction projects seem to be the alternative to collecting bhatta on the streets

But whatsoever be the reason, it is in my opinion, an utter waste of money

I pass by this area nearly every day. Looking at the other intersections on Shaheed-e-Millat, I frankly think that there shouldn’t be a round-about there at all! I’ve noticed that it’s often congested during most hours and becomes a death trap for people trying to either merge or go across. Better off with a signal at the intersection instead.

And while we’re on the subject, I’m just glad that horrific Mintoo toothpaste is gone. Besides being upside down, marketing departments need to learn that while toothpastes might look good on billboards, such sculptures will just creep the public out.

Mantissa – I agree with you but it appears they are just reducing the size but there will still be a medium sized roundabout, the signal might come up, I have no idea but whats the logic of a Signal and Roundabout – its always confusion for oncoming vehicles and one making a right. I fail to understand the logic

    @ TM: It’s how u see it.

The Council (KMC, CDGK or w/e), usually give out tenders & contracts for such ‘projects’ (goreish adverts). Both parties have a right to renew the signed documents if and when they expire.

Anyone remember the Emirates plane they put up opposite Park Towers?.

That too was demolised in about 2 years–(dont remember the exact timeline, but it was there for a while)— & when they started working on the widening of roads, construction of parks, they demolshed & reduced its size. (I think there’s a pectangular fountain there now).

Advertising on TV spots is usually one of the least effective ways as a very small % of your targeted demographic. The toothpaste makers probably felt they were getting more bang for their buck by erecting these monstrocities where they do!.

Im sure regulars know, I’m an avid supporter of MQM! (Cant you just taste the Sarcasm!? :P).

A lot of their ‘development projects’ are a bs, but if ure a Karachi’ite & are speaking without bias, you have to admit that things have improved over the past few years.

Sure, most of these plans were already drawn up by the previous Nazim & yes, the constant digging of every freaking road in the city is a pain in the b**t, not to mention the shoddy construction,
but the end result of most of these things have been helpfull.

Things (especially traffic) have gotten so much worse is because supply is exceedind demand.

i.e: We have the same infrastructure that was built some 60 years ago, to support BAEL GARI’s & no one bothered to upgrade it over the years or executed very poorly when tried.

Now with the population and “Ecnomic” (loans/financing schemes) BOOM, there are more vehicles than the roads can handle!.

As long as someone is trying to solve it, I dont care if Ariel Sharon or Altaf Hussain getting cut-backs!.
