Paanshop Extras

A few years back, paanwalas used to be just paanwalas. From that signature red paanwala kiosk that is omnipresent and survives the occasional local government encroachment drives as effectively as the cockroaches in your kitchen, one could only get a few things – paan, cigarettes and the locally made sweets and toffees. With the dispensable income in the middle class having grown appreciably over the past few years, the paan shops have started stocking more and more miscellaneous stuff that stand high chances of being bought by their regular customers. My list of such items and services includes: Cigarette lighters, calling card, wireless PCO and the imported and local killer gutkas. What else ‘new things’ do you spot at your paanwala?

Paan and Chai are two business which are MOST successful in Karachi and they are easily accessible anywhere. No doubt Karachi has made these people entrepreneurs.

    I wouldn’t trust a condom from a paan shop.

@jacktheripper: Don’t you seem a little enthusiastic about finding “this” item at a Khoka! :P try not be more interested in buying, you may end up complaining :P (No hard feelings)

As for my experience I have found Mortine Coils, mats, candles type stuff there as well… Plus a ‘highly sophisticated’ sound system having a cassette walk-man player powered by an AC adapter using Zoltrix PC speakers as an output device playing world class “W-11”-type music to add up spice to hectic daily business!
