Usability vs Image

chenchi2.jpg
The local administration of Gulshan-e-Iqbal has recently taken an initiative to deploy chinchi rickshaws between Gulshan Chowrangi and Gala Restaurant. For those who are not aware of the locality, this route forms an alternate link from Gulshan Chowrangi to Hasan Square. You can either go the NIPA – University Road or you can take this route. No buses are ployed on this route and hence the need of some public transport.

The rickshaws are hired on group basis @ Rs 6 per person per trip. The service is similar to what one would see operating in old Saddar area near St Joseph’s College. This obviously goes in-line with the requirement of having a cheap public transport arrangement for those who frequent this route. The chinchis that have been deployed for this purpose are usable but at the same time they stand out as something very odd. In a time when there are dozens of radio cab companies operating new flashy cabs in Karachi, the yellow colored, often shabby, chinchi rickshaw pulled right out of an interior town pose an unmet challenge of maintaining the image while ensuring usability.

Middle class really require this type of transportation. Good decision. As you all know I.I. Chundrigar Road is nearly in last phase of completion and in the past 1-C and 8A buses are running in this road and large number of people used this buses but now this bus service is closed. Rikshaw is demanding Rs.30/- from Jang Press/Shaheen to Police Head Offfice which is not offordable. My suggestion is restart this bus service again and also urged write a detail article on it and take up this matter in different forums.
