Gulgee Found Dead

It is with great shock and grief that I put up this post – There are a lot of rumours flying around so this is once again, based on things that are being reported on television and the news – Ismail Gulgee, a phenomenal artist and wonderful human being, was found dead in his home. As the news reported, his sisters had last seen him 2 days ago at dinner, and his son, Ameen Gulgee, found his mother, father and the housemaid, strangled in their home earlier today.

This is truly a great loss for all of us. There will be lots of speculation flying around, so an earnest request for each of us not to partake in the chatter to further add to the grief of the families. We can only hope and pray for them and may Allah bless the souls of those departed. Ameen.

What could’ve they possibly achieved by killing an 80 year old and his family?

  7. BoZz (unregistered) on December 19th, 2007 @ 9:13 pm

While it cannot be confirmed as yet but the speculation is that Amin was probably involved if not the perpetrator of this incident.

You did not hear this from me.

Do you guys know if the cop is succesful in finding the culprits involved in the killings of Hakeem Saeed and Mufti shamzai, ppl involved in the explosion on 12th Rabi-ul-Awwal and the recent explosion on MA Jinnah Road. Is there an website which gets updated ?

Any promises from the new upcoming rulers to find all those culprits ?

    Was able to dig up this thread about Gulgee’s work, containing some photographs;

    http://www.pakfellows.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=32&threadid=27641

Notice how he paints Allah in a single brush stroke encapsulating the galaxy and the universe.
My ex-boss in Karachi is an avid Gulgee collector, I saw some of his work there, it was a pleasure.

A Great Man is no more.

    It’s a great loss !!!!

I had been fortunate enough to visit Amin @ the family residence – and he was in a state of shock.

Apparently, driver and a chowkidar is missing with a car .

    In Time,
    Cheers!

The loss is too personal for the whole nation, or any one who knew him.

I extend my deepest condolence to Amin Gulgee for his loss.

  16. turab hasan (unregistered) on December 20th, 2007 @ 2:49 am

A complete shock!!! A great Loss!

In his own words, Gulgee described Karachi as such:

“While Lahore has a lot of art, history and culture,
I Can never find the energy that Karachi has to offer”

  17. Moiz Kazmi (unregistered) on December 20th, 2007 @ 3:35 am

What a shame! I was in utter shock all this evening, couldnt concentrate much on anything.
Pakistan could never get back Sadequain and now Gulgee no more, sad, weeping!

    @JAMAL SHAMSIE

    >>>> IS THAT FAMILY MUSLIM ? whisper it to me please,

Who gives a fvck? Apparently, morons like u do.

Gulgee wasted his talents on Islamic caligraphy, because General Zia and his islamic revolution provided a profitable environment for this crap.

But he was a great artist

People Wait & See !, don call each other by names

    Jamal & BOZZ are correct.

Many call us aga khani as non-muslims, and we don’t care.

yes it is dispute of family wealth. Bozz is very right, they all had a serious quarrel at dinner over which late gulgee asked the guest to get out of his house immediately or else he will call police, then he called someone close I know who was closest to gulgee out of his community.

The DIG Tahir is talking to that person as well.

Media will create a hYpE when police will come up with evidence of Murder and 2 most closed family names will apply for BAIL before arrest, after eid holidays.

It is a COLD blooded murder of an aging senior citizen and thats highly brutal & inhuman. It is all about money, & material., which wipes the blood relations and instigate people to commit such acts.

His chronic addict son was in a US drugn rehabilitation centre for 6 months after he was found over drugged at Yale.

Aga Khan Medical university psychiatary ward head Dr. Abul Faizi is consultant to amyn who is a psycho & a gay. Tapu Javeri gave up on his friendship because of Amyn imbalanced mental state.

wait and see, may the departed souls rest in peace

I think he was a genius. His work was unique and can’t be found anywhere else. His love for Quranic verses was quite visible everywhere. RIP gulgee sahab.

  26. Reality_Check (unregistered) on December 20th, 2007 @ 11:48 pm

Artists like Gulgee transcend borders, religion and politics. Altough their personal lives may not be very heart warming, its their work that lives forever.

So chill out guys, take this cursing somewhere else, for me a great artist is no more, whatever his religion or relationship with his family, I dont care. Ghalib, Sadequain and Wagner were not very popular in their families either.

    Well said, Reality_Check.

  28. Zeeshan Yusuf (unregistered) on December 21st, 2007 @ 7:02 pm

Gulgee was an Icon. His murder is a colossul loss to the Art Scene. And what does the artists’ religious belief have to do with his craft? Grow up people! Gulgee was a great artist of Pakistan & his name will live on.

what was wrong if I asked the question?,

many of you have got furious itch on that question, what? did i kicked somewhere senstive? or pinched at wrong place.

@BILGEE – THEY THEMSELVES ARE PATHAN BACKGROUND, so thats for sure a JUICY GOSSIP :)

@ Ahmed Aly, i did not mean any offence to anyone, many do not recognise me as a muslim too :) , because I believe & practice in Humanity 1st and thats why am an outcast from Muslims I believe in being INSAN 1st – (the radicals, the sunni, the shaites’, wahabis, the fundamentals etc etc count to 72) –

stories about murder is unfolding and am sure you sure have your reasons for exposing amyn.

Whatever Gulgee was or wahtever family issues he has I still feel bad for him and others who died. May Allah forgive them. I have lived in the US for 23 years and was thinking about moving back to Karachi. I also live in this same Clifton area. Is Pakistan this unsafe I ask? I wonder if I am making a huge mistake and exposing my family to a great danger?

  32. Jamal Shamsi (unregistered) on December 21st, 2007 @ 11:18 pm

Hameed B – there has to be some strong reasons for you to make such a choice, if you have OPTION / Choice – Dubai or Malaysia is safe, with good education, basic health and LAW Enforced

safe ? world is not enough

MY OUTLAWS live in Askari 3 – people broke in at 5 am n left at 7.15 taking away stuff in a shehzore with the house car as well,

Askari 3 houses the TOP officials of the Elite spook agency and 4 ASPs of Karachi Police service.
and dozens of retired & in service gv employees of grade 18 & above,…..

Oh my goodness! My reason are same as any other Pakistani who would like to be in his own country after living outside for long time. Everyone of my family members live in Pakistan. They seems to think all is okay but newspapers paint a diferent picture. Every time I visit all seems okay. We go out at night late and have fun but I guess living there is different. I don’t know what I am going to do?

  34. MOLVI TAMEEZ (unregistered) on December 22nd, 2007 @ 12:55 am

I was out, and two men barged in, put my family on gun point, gethered everything, kept threaening to handover “everything” or they would take my 2 years old niece away. This went on for 2 hrs.

Money lost, does not matter, but my old parents were shaken to core

  35. Hameed B (unregistered) on December 22nd, 2007 @ 1:29 am

Crime is high in the US also. Karachi is almost the size of LA. In comparison I would Karachi and LA should be quite equal in street crime. I will have to check.

Incidents like these, and I feel like saying “Pakistan ZINDABAD!!!”

  44. HITMAN (unregistered) on December 27th, 2007 @ 4:04 pm

Kashif, the Link isn’t there anymore but let me narrate what was in it:

    According to the “paper’s sources”
Guljee had filed cases against his different servants(around 8 or so) in different police stations regarding theft. The only arrested servant revealed that Guljee family, i.e. he, his wife & son Ameen, demanded “inappropriate” relations from servants who were hired from FATA & other tribal areas. On denail, they call the police for their arrest in false theft cases. He also revealed that he was given “special medications” by them that has caused his liver & kidneys severe damage. Investigating police also confirmed that the said arrested servant was hospitalized for 2 months as he was in a dire condition.”

I see no follow up on his murder & its investigation. Is something really fishy here & the Ismaili Lobby is trying to alter the case????
