Wateen WiMax Review

Just happened to come across this review on Wateen’s WiMax on Sarfaraz’s Blog and thought it would be interesting to share with Karachi Metroblogging readers here, some excerpts of his post are included here while the details review can be found at Sarfaraz’s Blog

I bought Wateen’s WiMax service and equipment yesterday. Just a while ago I got activated and online with Wateen’s WiMax. The package I bought is a bundle offer of 1 Year for about Rs. 18,000/-. The speed is very good, and I am getting downloads at 65+ kBps. The streaming experience is very good as well. YouTube, MetaCafe, LiveGeoNews Stream are all coming in smooth.

Package Details:

The package I mentioned above is a 12 months Internet and Telephone bundle offer. The first month is free internet and telephone uptill 31st January, 2008. So, if you buy your connection now, you are actually going to get 13 months of service. As I mentioned, the package costs you about Rs. 18,000/- but there are two ways to make the payment.

The first way is that you pay all the amount at once.

The the second option is that you can pay Rs. 4850/- at the time of buying the connection and hand them 11 post dated cheques of Rs. 1350/- each staring from 1st March,2008 till 1st Jan, 2009. The initial cash payment includes Rs. 3000/- upfront payment, Rs. 1350/- 1st Month’s payment and Rs. 500/- security deposit (refundable).

The package also includes telephone service. Again you can make unlimited national and international calls for free till 31st Jan ’08. I can’t say about the quality of telephone service, because mine in not activated yet. You can plug in the regular telephone into the CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) and you are done. Telephone number alloted will be a PTCL number, starting with 8025 (as for now). As for the rates that will apply after Jan 31st, 2008 here comes a catch. The bundle offer actually signs you up for “EverGreen Unlimited” fixed line telephone package. This package has a line rent of Rs. 270/- per month and is included in your 1350/- per month payment. So, if you are not making enough calls then you are sending Rs. 270/- to the trash.

I hope that this brief post will help any one interested to make a decision, as for me I am enjoying fast internet and hope to get the telephone working soon.

the current problem is hardware device which is big enough that can’t be moved around easily. It has been told that it would take around half an year to introduce small ethernet size cards for Wimax network.

In presence of wateen, days of local TV and Internet cable services are over.

    Thanks for sharing.

for the record I have no link whatsoever with Wateen – just o make things clear.

Adnan, the inhouse CPE provided by Wateen is light enough to be carried around easily. It hardly weighs a few grams – at most.

Other than that chinese made WiMax pcmcia cards meant for laptops are being tested by Wateen as we speak. And I was told that they’ll be put up on sale by April this year.

You can read more about wateen, it’s services and people’s comment here:

@ALAM: no i have no affiliation with Wateen.
@Naveed: PTCL DSL is pretty good, provided u have a clear phone line, else, you can try worldcall or Wateen’s Wimax

No Alam is not Poo Poo Head. Only difference b/w Alam and Poo Poo is that Poo Poo is a firm believer. Besides that I see many similarities b/w Alam and Poo Poo. Infact Poo Poo likes Alam. :-)

I live in North Nazimabad Near Madras Bakery & was unlucky enough that the equipment couldn’t catch the WIMAX signals inside my home despite the fact that WATEEN has two boosters in North Nazimabad, One is @ Sakhi Hasan @ Serena & the other near McDonalds. :(
Otherwise I would have been enjoying the package. as far as TV is concerned, they plan to launch it by March/ April 2008 but equipment for the TV will be seperate from the current CPE for Internet & Telephone.

Using Wateen Wimax in Askari 4 Rashid Minhas road – 512 KBPS / 10 gig limit for 1350 Rs per month and paying 5849 Rs total upfront.

Absolutely satisfied with the speed, it rocks. Had some trouble getting my username & password from the guys as they were having some issue with their software.

The telephony services wateen to wateen are top notch.

    loving every bit of it.

  19. Sarfaraz Soomro (unregistered) on January 7th, 2008 @ 8:44 pm

SUFI: why did u pay Rs. 5849/- when every one else is paying Rs. 4850/- ?? U must inquire man…

  20. d0ct0r (unregistered) on January 7th, 2008 @ 9:08 pm

  21. d0ct0r (unregistered) on January 7th, 2008 @ 9:10 pm

@Sarfaraz what is the monthly cap on your connection?

  22. d0ct0r (unregistered) on January 7th, 2008 @ 9:18 pm

    @Sarfaraz i think you’re subscribed to 512 with 8gb cap

  23. Sufi (unregistered) on January 8th, 2008 @ 8:45 am

Sarfaraz, I don’t know that’s what they asked for. I don’t remember the details but I will surely call the manager in a bit and inquire about it.

Doctor, 512 KBPS is with 10 gb limit.

  24. Sarfaraz Ahmed Soomro (unregistered) on January 8th, 2008 @ 12:20 pm

yeah i have 512/10 GB cap

  25. d0ct0r (unregistered) on January 8th, 2008 @ 9:58 pm

@Sarfaraz so total you’d be paying would be 19700?

4850+(1350×11)=rs19700 for 512kbps connection with 10gb cap per month

sarfaraz bhai, wateen franchise charged me 5849/- as well. They said, that the additional 1000/- is for installing the equipment. Although, I installed it myself. I have all the reciepts, can you please advise how to refund my 1000/-, thanks.

  27. Sarfaraz Ahmed Soomro (unregistered) on January 9th, 2008 @ 11:55 am

    @DOCTOR: right!

@TANVEER: I’d be as clueless as u are, but i think u can go to the franchise and talk to the manager( or a guy named Zeeshan Rauf) or u can call the wateen help line (they’ll put u on hold for 6-7 min) and complain to them.

I live about 350m away from the AP, but still the CPE cant seem to establish a connection with the AP. The least what the CPE got was a weak signal which according to the sales rep is “Fair”. Initially the sales rep told me that since am in the range(1.5km) of the AP, I wont find any problem and the signals will be “Excellent” as per jargon they use. But it happened the other way. The AP, according to the sales reps, is not affected by the weather conditions and the signal will remain steady. This claim of theirs was found to be a big lie after it rained, I tried to connect but the CPE kept on doing its knight rider thing. The location of the AP I am reffering is at the Ibn e Sina Hospital, near NIPA, Gulshan e Iqbal Block 6. Its a pity that a company belonging to such a big group has sales reps n support guys so poorly trained that they don’t even know what the company is actually offering to the customers and even if theres a problem with the service they’re not willing to tell you when the prob will be resolved.

    @ Teeth Maestro,OBI

aa kay baethey bhi naa thay aur nikaley bhi gaa-ay….lol

market bara tough hai aaj kal….Wateen is wasting too much on advertizing…and their prices are very low….i dont think they could hold on for that long wanna bet…?

  32. Arodir (unregistered) on January 17th, 2008 @ 11:42 am

Is there a way to find out before hand where the APs are located to gauge how signals will be at my place? Or do I call the techs over and they’ll check?

    I live in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, block 17.

And if signals aren’t good, does the antenna help? I live in an apartment building. I heard from someone that antennas aren’t available for the CPE model used yet…

Good service but keeps logging out and needs to be conected manually by entering the user name and pass word which are not easy to remember. Can it be logged on automatically once it gets logged off???

  34. Jawed Shahzad (unregistered) on January 20th, 2008 @ 5:50 pm

    Hey all!

Is there any possibility to connect four machines at CPE? and will they work simultaniously?

  35. Shehryar (unregistered) on January 22nd, 2008 @ 6:40 pm

I’ve have had a lot of experience with people installing PTCL, Netsol, Worldcall internet at their houses. So far PTCL delivers a very good browsing experience for most people but some people have bad telephone lines and have had trouble with it. Also, PTCL seems to be high-speed downstream but very slow upstream so uploading photos or sending emails with attachments can be difficult. Sometimes some particular websites such as facebook or cnn are not available while all other websites are reachable – perhaps a problem with PTCL DNS servers or something. The main problem with PTCL is that it relies on PTCL phone lines which everyone knows are very unreliable. I have used Worldcall in various locations in Karachi and Lahore and it just sucks. It is slow up and down and also very intermittent. Outages of several minutes or hours occur basically everyday or several times a day. I find Worldcall so be almost unusable. Netsol IR fixed radio is reliable but slow and targeted at high volume office environments and costs tens of thousands per month. Now a few people have started getting Wateen and have reported brilliant speed – a better browing experience then PTCL which is already very good. Wateen does not currently have a SMTP outgoing mailserver so it is not good for people who need direct email service from their ISP. This is an odd thing and casts doubt on their level of professionalism. Of course, browser based email services such as hotmail and gmail will still work. So far Wateen reliability and service capabilities are unknown since they are so new.
