Election Watch : NA-251 / Karachi – XIII

http://karachi.metblogs.com/archives/images/2008/02/na-251-thumb.jpgNext up is the NA-251 seat for review on this election watch series on Karachi Metroblogs. KMB Election watch has previously covered NA-239, NA-240, NA-241, NA-242, NA-243, NA-244, NA-245, NA-246, NA-247, NA-248, NA-249 & NA-250.

NA-251 covers posh areas of Karachi Administrative Housing Society (KAHS) and PECHS, besides other areas. Comprising eight out of 13 union councils of Jamshed Town, the constituency covers parts of old South and East districts’ areas which include localities behind Jacob Lines, PECHS, Jut Lines, Abyssinia Lines, Chanesar Goth, Mehmoodabad, Liaquat Ashraf Colony, Kashmir Colony, Manzoor Colony, Akhtar Colony, Junejo Town and Defence Bungalows.

Results of the previous general elections held between 1988-2002 show that the constituency had not been dominated by any one party as in the two elections held in 1988 and 1990 the constituency was represented by HPG candidate Syed Tariq Mehmood. The HPG boycotted the 1993 elections, and Capt Haleem Ahmad Siddiqui (retd) of the PML (N) won this NA seat. He again won the seat in the 1997 elections by defeating the HPG candidate by a margin of more than 6,400 votes. But in 2002 after the reallocation of the constituency MQM bounced back barely beating MMA by 1800 votes

Take the poll

Free Poll by Blog Flux2008 Elections: Total number of Registered Voters 337,193 (194,116 Male & 143,077 Female). The candidates attempting to win this seat in the National Assembly are

  1. Waseem Akhtar (MQM)
  2. Choudhri Umar Hayat (PPP)
  3. Mushahidullah Khan (PML-N)

2002 Elections: In the 2002 elections there were 210,491 Registered Voters in NA-245 of which 37% polled that day (77,838). The candidates were

  1. Syeed Safwan ullah (MQM) – 23856
  2. Abdul Ghaffar Umer Kapadia (MMA) – 22045
  3. Mushahid Ullah Khan (PML-N) – 8615
  4. Qaiser Khan Nizamani (PPPP) – 8347

Prediction: This seat could have been a close battle between Jamaat Islami and MQM, but with JI sitting it out then its definitely a walk over for MQM whi will sweep this constituency. Hence the predicted winner should be Waseem Akhtar of MQM. My guesstimate tally is now MQM at 11 & PPP at 2 for the seats covered up till now on Karachi.

This seat is of particular interest for Muttahida, because it has large pockets of Hazara, Punjabi and other communities where Marwat and Paganwala clans always held sway. But this time round I hear that MQM has made great inroads in those areas and are well set to winning over a sizeable portion of that electorate. If that happens then it will be a welcome gain for Muttahida in persuit of diversification of their vote bank.

If non-Mohajirs voted for MMA guy last time, it means they r probably religous ppl (some could be anti MQM and non religous). And by all chance, PML-N stands to gain, rather than PPP, and since they polled 1/3 of MQM’s votes, I predict MQM’s easy victory here.

Hello folks, I am back in Town. Hope all of you are good.
Hello BitterTruth , If Waseem Akhter is eating pan, what is wrong with you. It has nothing to do with his Post Grad in Engeineering from US which many of us have not seen in real. He is yet another highly educated MQM candidates among hundreds who are contesting. Please dont try to object on every thing. Be realistic.

Awab, you didn’t finish capturing all the constituencies as promised. Come on friend, you should not be moving with the winds. It was nice presentation/series by you and we all appreciate your efforts. There are few folks who dont want this and this forced you back from your committment which is disappointing for me. Anyways take care and stay blessed.
