Garbage burning along Korangi Expressway continues

Burning of garbage along the Korangi Expressway continues despite repeated complaints by the residents of Qayyumabad and Akhtar Colony.

The citizens complained that Jamshed town officials burn solid waste and garbage at an open space adjacent to the Korangi Expressway, instead of shifting it to proper dumping sites.

“We face problems because of dense clouds of smoke and harmful gases emitting from the burning litter in front of our homes,” the citizens complained. Motorists and commuters traveling on Korangi Expressway also face difficulties, as a large portion of the road remains engulfed in thick smoke.

Kashif Ahmed, who lives in a house facing the expressway, said that his family has been suffering from coughs and other diseases. “The matter has been raised before all relevant civic authorities, including the UC nazim, EDO Municipal Services but nothing has been done yet,” he added.

Nasarul Islam Usmani, who works in a private environmental firm and commutes daily on the Korangi Expressway, said that in the evening, smoke from the burning garbage reduces the visibility on the road and also causes suffocation.

The smoke from burning domestic and market waste normally produces carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, dioxin and hydrogen cyanide, which are poisonous, he said, adding that burning waste along the Malir river also causes serious hazards to marine life.

The Korangi Association of Trade and Industry spokesman said that the area where garbage was thrown and burnt is actually a storm-water drain. “We have written letters to the Jamshed town nazim and to the city nazim but nothing has been done to solve the issue. We have requested the police to deploy some people there to prevent Jamshed town staff from dumping garbage,” he said.

Jamshed Town Nazim, Javed Ahmed, said that he has no information about the matter and their sanitation department dumps garbage at the landfill site at Jam Chakhro. “I will look into the matter myself and take remedial action if the allegations are found true,” he said. ppi

I think most of the kachra produced in Karachi on daily basis gets burned one way or another. I have never seen a landfill in Karachi, if you are aware of existance of one then please share the info.

@Adnan Siddiqui – Do they ever shut up on your planet?
Awab and his cronies should try writing “fiction”.

On a more serious note, garbage disposal is a serious problem for Karachi; most of it dumped outside Karachi.

What I am really concerned about is a more dangerous source of solid waste generation; that is from: hospital, clinics and pathological laboratories which can cause Hepatitis C and HIV / AIDS.

Haq Parast Panel is working on the issue and I am sure in time we will (like many other things which MQM provided) have a quality waste disposal system in Karachi.
