Parking plaza in Saddar to go operational in one month

CDGK & Nazim Karachi announced today plans to launch a Parking Plaza in Saddar within one months time to help relieve the traffic congestion in that area. I believe this is a positive move by the local administration in developing this project as Karachi is strife with numerous building projects with ample office space but absolutely no parking for its visitors.

Geo [via @GeoNews Twitter update] The country’s first parking plaza in Saddar here would start operation within a month’s time. This was announced in a statement of the City District Government Karachi. The seven storey facility has been constructed at a cost of Rs.700 million. It has a capacity of 800 cars and 300 motorcycles. The Nazim of Karachi, Syed Mustafa Kamal, visited the parking plaza on Thursday and said that this is the first parking plaza in the country.

A very much needed amenity indeed! There is a building project in the works (the Dawood Islamic Tower, to be located in the financial district), in which there is planned several storeys of parking space which will be made available to building occupants as well as area commuters. It’s refreshing to see these changes in infrastructure, with entrepreneurs and city government formulating plans in this manner AND we may have hope for a much better traffic situation in the long run.

Kudos to CDGK and Mustafa Kamal!

    22 Jan 2009:

Karachi Jan 22: City District Government Karachi has completed all arrangements for vehicle parking in Pakistan’s first parking plaza at Saddar which will be started within a month.

The seven storey building of the parking plaza has been constructed by city government with a cost of Rs.700 million having the capacity for parking of 800 vehicles and over 300 bikes approximately.

Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal on Thursday inspected the building of plaza along with DCO Karachi Javed Hanif and EDO Transport Iftikhar Qaimkhani.

In a briefing on this occasion, he was apprised about the salient features of the project. Nazim Karachi was informed that the unique design of the building also has space for offices and shopping center besides parking of vehicles. Latest scanning machines and camera will be used at the plaza to monitor all visitors while the plaza will also equip with standby generators and heavy lift for vehicles.

Nazim Karachi on this occasion directed to speed up development work so that the project could be completed within a month.

He also instructed to select separate place for vehicle wash at each floor.

Nazim Karachi also directed EDO Transport to conduct a complete survey of the whole area before the opening of the plaza so that the Empress Market area and other streets in Saddar could be declared parking free zone.

He also instructed to present whole plan to DIG Traffic before the formal inauguration.

Nazim Karachi said that the whole area including Empress Market will be declared parking free zone after the inauguration of parking plaza.

Meanwhile the shopkeepers of Shahabuddin Market at Saddar apprised City Nazim about their problems on which he assured them that city government will soon start development work on second parking plaza in Saddar with its own resources where the original allottees of Shahabuddin Market will be allotted with shops with ownership rights.

Appologies for raining on the parade but has anyone seen where this "parking plaza" is located and what purpose it is going to serve?

    – It’s next to a factory so the hazard of fire and short-circuit will always be there.
    – One can not park the car here and take a walk to Bohri Bazar, Zaibun-nissa street, Zainab Market, Electronics Market (Abdullah Haroon Road) etc.
    – Maneuvering around the parking area is difficult due to a regular thela-bazaar which turns into weekly bazaar on Sunday.
    – There is a girl’s school nearby which will get affected by movement of parking vehicles.

By looking at the picture (link above) I don’t think its going to be functional in at least couple of months.

It would be better if the plaza was made somewhere near Abdullah Haroon Road or Regal.

oh yes the marshmello’s are finished …saddar se le aaon…!thanks man for reminding…

when this parking plaza project started i was very excited….It is a very nice view from the top floors of student briyani…the road which is an extention of road from empress market use to be an empty road…now with bye lanes and tributries opened we see traffic from everywhere…trying to enter sadder….periodic jams right infront of this parking plaza…getting in and out may be a hassle now…and iam not sure about the exact capacity but the place may not solve all the problems…as it is coming up too late.

ps:the bird seller on the opposite side sold the foxes…buyers beware!

Let’s appreciate our great Nazim and Muthida Qaumi Movement(s) efforts in developing our city and more specifically, in this case making these parking spaces.

Lets not forget this is already a narrow or an old space and space can not be created. Let’s just appreciate that we have something instead of “nothing”. VOTE HAQ PARAST PANEL, MQM, FOR THE NEXT LOCAL BODIES ELECTION

@ Barrister sab with all due respect….may I be granted the liberty to ask you a very simple question…which city of the world would you be kind enough to call an equal to karachi in every respect….or just two, population and revenue generated…?

and please I don’t even wish to burden you by naming the cites already declared(awarded) a TWIN CITY with karachi…

  13. barrister on January 26th, 2009 @ 1:57 pm

    wasiq bhai,
the answer to your question is none and a valid point too, Sir. And this is the freaking economic exploitation I am talking about.
We get back only 4-5% and rest is chewed by our so-called, "pahen, pai’s" from North" …we live in a great city, we are great people!

The efforts of MQM and Altaf Hussain will make Karachi the Next Singapore of Asia Inshahallah very soon.

@ Barrister sab….my learned friend you availed the opportunity as I had expected…we have been hearing this song since 1987….it was so fresh and exciting back then….this is the year 2009 as i last checked…I used the word revenue generated…my bad..should have either added "for karachi" or should have used the term funds available for karachi only…

how about now please try again…just one name of a city in the whole wide world…!

  16. barrister on January 26th, 2009 @ 8:01 pm

    Wasiq Bhai,
A bit of clarity helps . I do not know the answer to your question (unfortunately).

Khaled Bhai, Insh’Allah. VISION 2020 of MUSTAFA KAMAL if fully implemented will transform Karachi further…

  17. بستنی (wasiq) on January 26th, 2009 @ 10:28 pm

@ Barrister sab….my dear friend please accept my sincerest apologies for putting you on the spot with a very vague question.what do I know about planning and development of modern cities neither am I interested in 4,6,or 18 wheelers all I do is enjoy marshmello’s and watch football.. so lets just forget it and pray for the success of his excellency the honorable city nazim beloved mustafa kamal sab.

Btw,if I remember correctly about just over a year ago in reply to a query by someone using the psudo of "voice" you said you have an account in the Barclay’s and that they donot have a branch in karachi….now everywhere I go they have a multi-storey branches…you can’t miss the ones on faisal and near sultan mosque…on hafiz…how a british bank painted your town blue at a time like this of global recession…in just months..?

  18. barrister on January 27th, 2009 @ 2:23 am

YOUR TOWN what’s happening mate? Sarcasm? Kyoon Bhai?

Yaar, somehow or the other – I have an emotional attachment with Barclays and when they opened at Sahrah-e-Faisal, I was one of the first to open my account there. Unfortunately, what I hear like all other banks; Barclays are not doing very well but I am sure they will get stable in couple of years. After all these are hard times and we are in recession . As for opening and expanding branches as per State Bank regulations; a new bank has to open atleast 105-120 branches all over Pakistan (rural and urban) and I am not an expert in finance (prorably T.Zaidi Bhai is the right person) but I am sure Barclays will takeover one of the local banks within 2-3 years

Wasiq Bhai, I am a Chelsea supporter although still loves, cricket like our vary own Faisal.K bhai …..

  19. بستنی (wasiq) on January 27th, 2009 @ 8:56 am

@ Barrister sab….My very very dear friend….i admire you and respect you…I could never use sarcasm for something that is so evident….it is your town….and the Barclays came to the rescue because of your patronage…it is a very healthy sign for me and the pundits.. who know the british like the fog knows the dew…!

Imran hashmi’s hit movie..and someone very close to heart..made me quit cricket…you cannot imagine how i felt when i read about the 500wickets record in the latest series…other than that its a smooth sailing this fall…
my best wishes are with you and your club….

That is really going to make my few short weeks spent in KHI much better – although the potential problems mentioned above, and the nasty habit of buildings in PK to sometimes fall down makes me hope there will be valet parking ;)

  21. barrister on January 27th, 2009 @ 4:50 pm

Wasiq Bhai, Sharminda kar diya ; amaa choroo yaar!

As for Imran Hashmi aka Serial Kisser(s) movie about cricket is concerned; there seems to a reality behind it. LOL, loved the Inzamam-Bob scene…and yeah this Murli will break Wasim Bhai(s) record – I think he’s only three wickets away.

Bhabi, I thought we all hated valet parking..!!!!
