International Museum Day

1International Museum Day is celebrated each year on 18 May since 1977. Theme for this year is Museums and tourism. I came across a report on GEO early morning that Pakistani people have completely lost their interest in Museums. I recently had a chance to visit Karachi Museum, situated near DJ Science College and it was evident that people have llittle interest in such activities. There were only few visitors although the Karachi museum is a great place to go as Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, co-operation and peace among peoples. The staff there was quite cooperative to assist in any queries we had. I was just wondering how many of you have had a chance to visit the Karachi Museum.

Well, I have been to the museum twice. Both times, I thought that why call only this place "Pakistan Agaaib ghar"? Whole Pakistan is an ‘ajaaib ghar’!

Well, these days it probably does not even say ajaaib ghar. I guess most burgers don’t even know that it is called ajaib ghar.

First time was in 73 ir 74. Whole full buses of kids showed up from the school. baRaa mazaa aayaa thaa! I remember some badmash types engraving their names on those trees at the Burns Gardens.

Second time was in 2007 or 2008. I was talking to a friend from school days and he said lets check out the museum and some biryaani place near by!
I said yaar biryaani may tou bohut tael hotaa hae, but lets go to the Musuem. Well, did go to some famous biryaani place, but after having samosas and coke (or was it Pakola) from the small canteen at the Museum.

Well, there were kids, alright. Bilkul vaisay hee jaisay aaj say paentees saal pehlay balma aur oos kay dost vahan thay!

Things hadn’t change much. Same exhibits and same set up.

It seemed the whole museum was closed. WEll you see, all the lights in the halls were turned off and there was no one (NO ONE, in case some one didn’t get it) at the museum. Kids who had come were probably already done and playing in the garden outside.

The guys who were working there were thrilled to see two adults (if you count me as an adult) in the middle of the day over there. Oon kee khushy kaa koee Thikaanah nahi’n thaa when I was even asking them questions. I have never felt so welcomed anywhere. Strange.

Our poori qaum is chaywow. We have no interest in museums. Most are jamati like and probably think of statues as unislamic anyways.
You can’t say that ticket prices are keeping people away. I think it was either free or almost peanuts.
Since we try not to learn from history, why bother going to museum.

Well, since it is run as a government organziation, there is no advertisement. I bet most Dubai palaT burgers don’t even know that there is a museum in Karachi.

Also, today people can check out anything on the web, TV, and learn from radio. But, museums, movie houses, Gandhi Garden, coffee shops, beach kee baat hee kuchh aur thee/hae!
