Askari Park

Few months back, one of KMB’s author, Khurram Farooq, posted about Wildlife Aquarium and asked question from KMB readers if they had ever visited it. The reply was, as expected, muted.

While coming from office on Thursday I faced a massive traffic jam near old sabzi mandi due to weekly Ijtemah of Dawat-e-Islami at Faizan-e-Madina. Luckily I had a camera with me so I decided to visit Wildlife Aquarium and experience some Wildlife in Karachi.

ASKARI park is a family park – and two males don’t make a family, nor do one make it – which clearly means that you need a female member to complete the equation. Unfortunately, I had none. Faced with this very common problem I approached security office at Askari park and after long session of Topian and Dramay Maj (R) Jamil allowed me in.

Askari park has a staff of around 170 people with standby generators and desalination water plant of their own. Security system is very good and most of the park is monitored by surveillance cameras. Security looks better than most places.

The entry fee for park is Rs.5 and for Wildlife Aquarium it is Rs.10. Aquarium is air-conditioned and I have never seen an aquarium in Karachi with such a large collection of fish with excellent maintenance. Overall park maintenance is also good and children run around at various points in the park; skating area is also present for the more adventurous. Askari Park also allows jogging track and fee for whole month is 30 Rs only. On their staff card I found web address (this is presently not working).

While talking to the staff I came across one gentleman to whom I am not agreed. He told me, “You can not find any park in Karachi like Askari park’s maintainace and reason for that could be it is not under city government”.

    @ wasiq

Today evening I am planning to go there with family.

    Although last experience was HORRORable.

Park was full with phatichar people doing there phathicar things in public.

Yani pani n gutka eating, scrathing themsleves down there and littering, while a lot of black moving tents were there also.

Park was so nice, if those ugly distraction were not to be there….pity they charge 5 rs only, which let those suzukis full of mongols runover it….guess it shud be raised upto 50 to reduce such attacks.

Am going there again just to se the aquarium, as I wonder how I missed it last time, which made me rememebr I ran back in my phatphati after 1 hour or so while everyother oggling at us like we were fish out of water or something

I totally diagree with the entry fee…it should be free…..we must not change or try to change the rules for a once in a lifetime visitors like you and me….those people go their regularly…..and we are all aware how they live in those cramped pigeon holes called flats near by…..I only visit such places in the morning on holidays… I donot face the experiences that you have to face…..and visiting with the family must be an extra burden….you can’t do what the others are doing….lol

    Let the music play on
    (play on, play on)
    Everbody sing, everybody dance
    Lose yourself in wild romance
    Were going to party
    Karamu, fiesta, forever
    Come on and sing along!

    All night long! (all night)
    All night long! (all night)
    All night long! (all night)

    @ wasiq,

Sir jee baat tu sahee hai, I hardly go to morning joging in safari park anymore,

But I still say, either increase the fee, or keep those scum of earth away from neatly maintained parks.

If anyone can’t behave in front of ladies, if they can’t throw crap into dustbins, of the walk onto grass,

Then fine them heavy and throw them out.

If u have that system then pls I wud cast the first vote to make parks free

  15. بستنی (wasiq) on June 7th, 2009 @ 9:42 pm

so you mean to say that by paying an entry fee of Rs 5-50/- or a Rs 1000/- fine….they will learn to behave…..I don’t think so….if being surrounded by so many people does not make them feel the peer pressure….to act like humans than nothing can….
as for the free entry….sari duniya se aap inn kay naam pay daalars batoor rahey ho….kuch toh duniya ka khoof karo…..not only they deserve a free entry parks but also some kind of muftaa’s as well…..aik toffee tak nahein dey saktey bachoun ko…..aur chahtey ho kay quom salute marey yes sir keh kay….jootey saaf karey….aap ladies kay saath ho is lian bench chordh dein…..kharday houn toh baith jaein….leitey houn toh oth jaein….why are you so conscious of others…..why can’t you just ignore them and have a good time….and when will you stop treating your ladies like a Poodle…..when you are accompanying a lady to a park stop feeling like a bodyguard of her…people only notice you when you act strangely…..or dress differently or look like a foreigner….otherwise they know why you are there….

    @ wasiq.

Hmmm, actuly yar a high entry fee act as a social class filter of sorts on multiple layers, a entry of 350 per head in ARENA ensure no phatichar will tread inside, secondly if some complain is done, he fears he be thrown out and a waste of 350 x 5 for his whole family.

Sir yahan log pani ka plastic wala glas lay ke bhag jatay hain, do u thing a free bucket of tofees wud stay there and not abused by the first person to reach it.

Fasee khud bachpan me plane me 4 packet peanuts ke, aur bathroom se perfume anr sabun chura liya kertay thay….aaah kiya zamana tha, ab tu hotel walay toliya bi gin ker rakhtay hain…:)

    "Dress diffrently"

So I have to act like them in all sorts of lowly acts to be accepted and not probed.

Makes me rememebr a zombie movie, who attaked all humans unless other was also a stinking rotten flesh eating corpse himself, humans acted like one to let be unharmed and ignored.

Am I in a zombie land is it..??

  17. بستنی (wasiq) on June 8th, 2009 @ 9:10 am

so you have a choice….they don’t….you are expecting a certain level of behavior from them they don’t from you… are out of place they are not….so you are pushing your luck they are feeling lucky to be there….

there are ways of distribution of free samples and goodies in a public place…and these askari people knows them best…..after all they are running an army….

A public park (not a corporate luxuray recreational facility) must provide three basic things…..entertainment,education and freedom…..the three fundamental rights enshrined in the Universal declaration of human rights 1948 and the subsequent protocols signed by pakistan from time to time to fill up the kitty with every single dime thrown at ya….for the people,of the people and by the nations and united nations….

    "You can change"

And why do we talk in definates here, I say why can’t they chnage.?

If I am enjoying pinacolda on my terrace swing, while they play in the mud down there….yes I can play with them, but what if everyother one do that, we wud be negating the very essence of develpoment, to grow, to achive, to STAND OUT, I want and expect them to show some dignity, and don’t keep them into mud and muddy ways, that’s the first step towrds a better socity I guess.

"Army knows the way of distribution"

So r u implying that the stock all the free toffes and give half to chief of army and other half to the thousands of colenel and major colnel in our dime a dozen army…??

    And awam ko sirf wada-e-hoor

    @ wasiq.

Chalin sir, agreed on the corporate luxury recreatoion facility.

Agreed on the basic rights of the citizens, but sir is me kaheen duties of the citizen bhi hain kaheen.

When there is a bsic level of ethics required, I don’t ask for the moon, I don’t want them wearing tuxedos, know how many times of forks and spoons r required ans when, but when on signboards it says, pan ki peek mut thokain, kachra yahan na phainkain…don’t tell they are incapable to process such basic instructions or r they cruel enough not to follow it
