Violence and aftermath – Time for a change

Part II : The Problem

As the reality comes closer (15 deaths as of last report) and it occurs to this city that ONE MORE time, for history’s sake we gave this leadership ONE MORE opportunity to rule us and like it was expected they failed again. This takes the discussion back to what’s actually wrong with the people who rule us. This time they came through a SO-CALLED democratic process known as elections. So how elections could results in a setup that is more incompetent than ever. This also raises the question as to does election help cleansing or help corrupt reach power. I, along with many were few who strongly opposed the feb 18 elections and at least I was confident (and it proved once again) that these elections will simply result in reputation of the faces we badly require to get rid of. I waited very patiently to tell my friends who think that democracy is all about voting and FULLSTOP. What they lack is their understanding of democracy as a MACHINE that can deliver depending upon who is running that machine. The machine itself is nothing. If you put an SHO under a dakku how can you expect peace in a locality and then argue that democracy did not help. I believe with conviction that democracy, as a SYSTEM never ever came at first place here. For us to say democracy has arrived there has to be a minimum shape of it that can be seen functioning. Let’s start with basics here:
Starting from a VOTE how many of our voters (since much of the hoop hoola in jungle by these parties is about the number of votes also infamously known as awaami himayat) fulfill the following simple criteria required for a vote:
How many of the voters are honest with their OWN VOTE. Majority votes on the basis ethnicity, religion, class, family and other considerations. A Punjabi votes to Punjabi, a sindhi votes for sindhi, a shia/sunni votes for a shia/sunni and so on. Much cancer is added by the induction of religious self certified holy gatekeepers through establishment’s help.
A voter has many choices in front of him. How many understand their choices properly. Hardly any. They have no information about the choices they will vote. They have no idea on the character of the candidates, their past record, their source of income etc.
How many of the voters actually vote once and believe this process. Many of my friends (yeah obviously the HIGHLY EDCUATED) were proudly telling me in 2008, the number of times they were able vote. This is the mentality of the so called educated Karachi; now make your assumption about rest.
It’s also a point of great interest for me to note that majority of the educated know very well that the ones they are voting are corrupt, incompetent but they will still vote. This is where the social psyche part comes in which require a lengthy explanation and will be covered later along with the grand hijack.
The above is about Karachi which is supposed to be more literate about the democracy, at least in theory. The above is just to show that the voters are unaware about the democratic process and so therefore expecting democracy out of their choices is like living in fool’s paradise.
So how we reached this point at which the democratic process is so polluted that instead of offering a fresh air it’s only throwing toxic outputs (read leadership) at our face. The story goes back to 1970’s. It all started with THE GRAND HIJACK at NATIONAL level.
What people got wrong about DEMOCRACY is this:
Democracy is not a medicine. It’s an exercise and it’s to be done daily. One break in between and the whole effort is useless.

Pakistan + democracy = failed state.

Teach people democracy first, next empower them so they don’t feel scared of making their choices, and lastly educate them so they can actually make reasonable choices. Then only will democracy succeed in Pakistan.

    @ MB

For a change, I agree with ya on this,

Thanks for pointing out the probelms we all know, But you left the important part out, what to do with this rotten carcus..??

Its sickning to see how learned people try to defend and justify black deeds of PPP, PMLN, MQM, MMA, JI etc etc. Due to there affiliations, benefits, or simple due to a non existent accountability.

Even the media we all harp about is equally corrupt, so is our new sacred cow the judiciary more corrupt then corruption itself.

    Is army the solution…??

As it might take 100 years for our voters to get educaated enough, if they ever did.
Even the most eductaed, well off and forign returned are not hihger the the prejudice, what to say of the rest of the jahil qoum

35 people have died here in Karachi since 1st june. Majority of the victims belong to Muhajir Quami Movement. The actual problem is that Aamir Khan and Afaq Ahmed of Haqiqi MQM have been acquitted by courts from several cases so that coward NROfied absconding grand terrorist hiding and operating from British soil is feeling the heat and has asked his Mutahida foot soldiers to eradicate and hunt down Haqiqi’s supporters.

Its known that Amir Khan and Afaq Ahmed are not fond of each other and the MQM-H workers who are killed actually were sympathizers of Amir Khan and not Afaq Ahmed…\03\11\story_11-3-2007_pg12_2

BTW, even more interesting fact is that Sharif Khan was shot dead in Lahore as soon as the central working committee of MQM-H disowned Afaq and called for "the end of the cycle of Mohajir killings" ….it’s common knowledge who would have been involved in killing him in Lahore :)

If it weren’t for MQM… urdu speaking would have been annihilated by the pathans, punjabis, sindis, etc.. while MQM is not an ideal party, it’s the best thing that has happened to our city. Long Live MQM.
